Children's Book Review: National Geographic Kids United States Atlas

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS
UNITED STATES ATLAS
Fifth Edition

Published: July 11, 2017

Publisher: National Geographic Kids

Non-Fiction/Atlas

I loved maps as a kid. During any of our trips or Sunday drives, I would have the map out in the backseat, looking ahead to the next town we'd be going through. I loved measuring the distance between towns and looking at all the names of towns. I remember having a huge atlas that was referenced time and time again to look up where family members lived or a place mentioned on the news.

National Geographic is THE gold standard for reference books and this atlas is a must-have for your home or school library! This atlas features over 75 maps and 350 images of all things USA. Cartographers have teamed up with experts in education to create this wonderful resource for learning all about our wonderful country. Children will learn not just about the location of each state but it's physical and political features as well. There are icons to show each states economy and places of interest are mentioned highlighting the history and tourist attractions.

The book is divided into Regions beginning with a physical map and a political map with borders. Then pages highlight the assets of that region before moving into individual maps and pages for each state.

Of course, I had to feature the Iowa pages from the book. I love that it featured RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) as well as the numerous farming productions that contribute to our nation's economy. Kids will like looking at the maps up close and seeing what economies are key in a particular region. A corn stalk is featured right where we live and that is so true. We have a field right off of our backyard and are surrounded by corn and soybean fields everywhere we go.

This is such a wonderful resource for classrooms, home libraries, and homeschooling families. National Geographic has knocked it out of the park again with a great book for children to learn and enjoy!

Children's Book Review: If You Were Me and Lived in Cuba By Carole P. Roman

IF YOU WERE ME AND LIVED IN...CUBA
A Child's Introduction to Culture Around the World

By: Carole P. Roman

Illustrated by: Kelsea Wierenga

Published: July 17, 2017

Publisher: Chelshire Inc.

Non-Fiction

This fabulous series of non-fiction books for children has added another interesting country to its series. If you are like me, I seemed to know only negative things about the country of Cuba. There was much to learn in this short introduction to their culture.

I had no idea that Cuba, an island in the Carribean was such a viable country full of business and industry as well as athletics. Baseball and boxing are two of the countries most popular sports. Roman introduces children to what life would be like if they were living in Havana, Cuba. Children will learn about their families, the schools, the food they would eat, the celebrations they would have and how they have fun. By using Spanish words in the book, children feel a bit more immersed in the culture and can guess what the Spanish word means. Then checking the glossary in the back, they can see if they were correct.

Roman has written another book that I recommend you add to your home or school library, She is a talented writer and never disappoints. Homeschool families and teachers would find these books a great asset to their teaching.

Carole P. Roman is the award-winning author of the Captain No Beard series. Both Captain No Beard-An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life and Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis have received the Kirkus Star of Exceptional Merit. The first book in the series was named to Kirkus Reviews Best 2012. Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis has been named to Kirkus Reviews Best of 2015. Each book in the series has won numerous awards including the NABE Pinnacle Award, IAN Award, Moonbeam Award 2014, National Indie Excellence Award Finalist, Shelf Media Outstanding Series Award, ForeWord Review Five Star and Finalist in the Book of the Year, and Reader's Views Children's Book of the Year 2013.

Carole P. Roman is also the author of the award-winning non-fiction culture series, "If You Were Me and Lived in..." that explores customs and cultures around the world. She has co-authored a self-help book, Navigating Indieworld A Beginners Guide to Self-Publishing and Marketing. She lives on Long Island with her husband and near her children and grandchildren. Carole invites readers to connect with her via her website.

Quick Lit: Mini Reviews of Some Recent Reads - October Edition

I'm trying to read more books that I choose for my own reading enjoyment. Not for review, but because I've been wanting to read them or they caught my attention. Most of them have been talked about ad nauseam or have been on my to-read list for a long time so they don't really need a full review. But, I'd still like to give them some space here on the blog.

I'll be linking up with Modern Mrs. Darcy and her monthly Quick Lit link up. Be sure to head over to see others link up their Quick Lit posts.

I'm finishing up my third week of subbing and it has been quite an adjustment to be working every day for someone who hasn't done that in a very long time. I am awed by all the women who work full-time, make it to every single one of their kids' events and still find time to shower and sweep their floor. Most of my free-read time has been spent grading papers and doing other things that I need to catch up with at home. But, I did read some books and short stories for my classes and listened to an audiobook. I'm feeling accomplished!

A MAN CALLED OVE
By: Fredrik Backman
Published: July 15, 2014
Publisher: Atria Books
Format: Audiobook

After reading BEARTOWN this summer, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. It had been on my list for quite awhile. The audio version came up on my Bridges library account and I flew through it. Since I'm not driving around as much, I listened to it while I got ready for school every morning. It's only nine hours long and once I started I found ways to listen to while washing dishes and cleaning the house. Then when I was done, I missed Ove, Parvaneh, Rune and wanted to keep hearing about Ove's day.

Ove is a crotchety man who still has a lot of life to live. But sadly, he doesn't feel like he can go on any longer after his wife's death. So, he starts each day, planning to kill himself, and each day, something gets in the way of that. His new neighbors with a baby on the way and his long-time neighbors keep needing him to help them and slowly, Ove is brought out of his shell.

A MAN CALLED OVE is another favorite book for me this year and I would highly recommend reading or listening to it.

ANTIGONE
By: Sophocles
Format: Textbook

I read this along with the sophomore honors class at school. When Antigone decides to go against Creon's law and properly bury her brother Polyneices, she starts a firestorm among the people of Thebes, the gods, and Creon. Creon is unable to see past his stubborn pride and what follows is what makes the story of Antigone a true tragedy.

We had numerous great discussions about pride, about family values, and about doing what is right even if it is against what someone else expects you to do.

THE SCARLET IBIS
By: James Hurst
Format: Textbook

This short story tells the story of a young boy who is frustrated by his brother's disabilities. So, he takes in on himself to help him learn to walk, swim, and other activities. The story is full of symbolism and is a great teaching tool.

THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET
By: Sandra Cisneros
Format: PDF

In looking for a short story that I could have students read, another teacher recommend this book because the chapters are all kind of a story in and of themselves. Some of the chapters are just a couple paragraphs so it made it easy for me to assign just a few of them to a group of students, yet they could still have enough to read and talk about the content.

I found a lot of the students could relate to THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET. The characters are forced to move around a lot and finally, this house on Mango Street belongs to them. But it isn't exactly how Esperanza, a latino girl, pictured a home to be.

_____________________________________________________________________________

So, even though I'm not reading the typical books on my shelves, I'm still reading....every day. With the students, I'm currently reading OF MICE AND MEN, OEDIPUS REX, and JULIUS CAESAR. That will be enough to keep me busy this month!

Hope you have found something good to read this month!

Children's Book Review: Benjamin Franklin's Wise Words By K.M. Kostyal

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN'S WISE WORDS
How to Work Smart, Play Well, and Make Real Friends

By: K.M. Kostyal

Illustrated by: Fred Harper

Published: January 24, 2017

Publisher: National Geographic Kids

Non-Fiction

Even though this book of quotes, wisdom, and life lessons from Benjamin Franklin is written for upper elementary to middle-school-aged kids, adults will love it too. I did! I love books that involve quotes and bits of wisdom and I have several in my own personal library. This easy-to-read hardcover offers quotes from Benjamin Franklin along with bits of wisdom and explanation for kids to go along with each quote.

The illustrations are super fun. They appear as watercolors with fabulous caricature-like expressions and people in time-period appropriate clothing.

Benjamin Franklin was quite the interesting man and went on to be one of our Founding Fathers. Even though he didn't go to school after the age of ten, he still found ways to learn, explore, and create. He was an inventor, author, scientist, and political activist to name a few. No moss grew under his feet! Benjamin Franklin was known for his many sayings and advice and this book collects fifty of them important for kids and adults to ponder.

In all of his travels, Benjamin Franklin made numerous friends. Those connections helped him become one of our Founding Fathers. But, while visiting friends you could hear him say one of his famous quotes, "Fish and visitors stink after three days."

The book is broken down into chapters of Tranquility, Industry, Order, Humility, Resolution, Sincerity, and Moderation. Then each of the quotes is sorted according to their area of interest. Franklin's quote is shared first, then there is a retelling of the quote in easier to understand terms. Then a few paragraphs about Franklin and his life related to the quote fill the rest of the page. I learned a lot I didn't know about him and he was quite a fascinating man.

I thought this book was really great and is one I will be keeping on my shelf. I could see teachers using these quotes as a type of 'bell-ringer" activity. Opening with the quote and asking students to write about what the quote means to them would also encourage some great discussion. This would be a great gift for history buffs and students who like stating witty quotes or learning about our great leaders.

Children's Book Review: Pug & Pig Trick-or-Treat By Sue Lowell Gallion

PUG & PIG TRICK-OR-TREAT

By: Sue Lowell Gallion

Illustrated by: Joyce Wan

Published: July 25, 2017

Publisher: Beach Lane Books

Fiction

Pug and Pig are the best of friends. Pig is super excited to wear his costume for Halloween until he finds out that Pug does not like his costume and doesn't want to participate in all the fun Halloween activities. Pig is sad and doesn't know who will go with him to trick-or-treat or play all the fun games. Can Pug come up with a plan to celebrate Halloween with his friend, Pig?

This simple story will delight children and get them excited for Halloween. Pug and Pig are wonderful friends who do everything together. When Pug realizes that Pig is sad, he comes up with a solution to make Pig happy again. Pug also offers a dilemma that many children face, having to wear masks and uncomfortable costumes. I really disliked wearing masks as a child and pretty much wore the same witch costume every year so I didn't have to wear masks on my face. Little kids will find Pug's new costume idea silly and giggle at the illustrations. Since the book is centered around Halloween, the colors are dark and muted, but the expressions on Pug and Pig are easily identifiable and these two round little animals are just adorable. Pug and Pig also share a lesson on a compromise that will come in handy for friendship and sibling relationships.

The author published her first Pug and Pig book a year ago and I could see the series becoming popular among younger children. If you like having books focused on certain holidays and events, this would make an excellent addition to your home library.

Books That Came in September 2017

Last week was crazy with it being Homecoming week. But it was so much fun! Our son Patrick was crowned Homecoming King which has been so wonderful. We are so proud of him.

I'm in my second of a thirteen-week long-term sub. I'm still getting into my groove of this new routine and struggling with finding time to read when our nights and weekends are also so busy. I do have a few good books to share this month that I am really anxious to read.

Today is also my 45th birthday and one of the books I'm sharing below was my gift to myself. I'm so blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life. My husband and children, my parents and extended family, and my closest friends make life absolutely wonderful. I am thankful for all of you as well that allow me to share my love of reading with you. Books truly bring me joy and I hope that I have shared a bit of that joy with each of you.

Currently Reading: OEDIPUS REX (with students), OF MICE AND MEN (with students), BENEATH A SCARLET SKY
Currently Listening: A MAN CALLED OVE
STILL Reading: HOW TO MANAGE YOUR HOME WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND, GRACE, NOT PERFECTION
Up Next: I can't even say because these are going to take me awhile to get through now.

If you would like to purchase any of the books in this post, clicking the photo or title of the book will take you directly to Amazon. If you choose to purchase the book I may receive a small commission without you having to pay a cent more for your purchase. Thanks for supporting me.

THE BEST DAY EVER
By: Kaira Rouda
Published: September 19, 2017
Publisher: Graydon House
Format: Paperback

I previously read and reviewed Rouda's book IN THE MIRROR back in 2014. Her newest is a completely different type of book and it is already getting a lot of buzz. It reminds me of the book BEHIND CLOSED DOORS which I read almost straight through.

I glance at my wife as she climbs into the passenger seat, and I am bursting with confidence. Today will be everything I’ve promised her…and more…

Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he's promised today will be the best day ever.

But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?

THOSE WHO SAVE US
By: Jenna Blum
Published: May 2, 2005
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Format: eBook

This has been on my list for a long time and when it came up as a Kindle Deal, I snagged it. I fell in love with Blum's writing in GRAND CENTRAL.

For fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota. Trudy's sole evidence of the past is an old photograph: a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuhrer of Buchenwald.

Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother's life.

THE HAPPINESS PROJECT ONE SENTENCE JOURNAL
A Five-Year Record
By: Gretchen Rubin
Published: November 1, 2011
Publisher: Potter Style
Format: Hardcover

I've been wanting this journal for awhile and I decided it would be my birthday present to myself. I am letting go of my "Type A" tendency and starting it on the day I received it. This journal will take me through the rest of my 40's and I am hoping for 5 solid years of happiness to read through. It's a way to chronicle all those happy moments I have with our kids. In five years, Reagan will be a senior and the boys will be done with college. I can't even fathom that. I can find time to write one sentence and remember one moment of happiness from my day. I'm super excited to keep this going.

365 days. 5 years. 1,825 happy moments. The Happiness Project One-Sentence Journal for Mothers is the ideal project for moms who want to capture the everyday moments of their child's growth but are naturally short on time.

Based on the book, Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin, this five-year journal will help you make a time capsule of your family's growth in the simplest way possible. You can start at any point in the year. Simply turn to today's date, and take a few moments to think about the quote or question on the top of the page. Jot down your thoughts and perhaps a note or reflection about your child. As the years go by you'll notice how your children evolve and discover the aspects about your family that lead to lasting happiness. The quotes are interesting, funny, and always thought-provoking. The diary can be started on any day of the year but makes a terrific gift for the New Year or Mother's Day.

THE UNQUIET GRAVE
A Novel
By: Sharyn McCrumb
Published: September 12, 2017
Publisher: Atria Books
Format: Hardcover

This was part of my Page Habit subscription this month. Along with the book came a collection of short stories, a coaster, a Time Traveler patch, and a bookmark with the quote, "The love of books is a love which requires neither justification, apology, nor defense." J.R. Langford

When I first looked at the book that was sent, I thought maybe I had gotten sent the mystery shipment and not historical fiction. But then reading the synopsis, I noticed it's a bit of both mystery and history and it's based on a true story, which is even better!

From New York Times bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb comes a finely wrought novel set in nineteenth-century West Virginia, based on the true story of one of the strangest murder trials in American history—the case of the Greenbrier Ghost.

Lakin, West Virginia, 1930
Following a suicide attempt and consigned to a segregated insane asylum, attorney James P. D. Gardner finds himself under the care of Dr. James Boozer. Fresh out of medical school, Dr. Boozer is eager to try the new talking cure for insanity, and encourages his elderly patient to reminisce about his experiences as the first black attorney to practice law in nineteenth-century West Virginia. Gardner's most memorable case was the one in which he helped to defend a white man on trial for the murder of his young bride—a case that the prosecution based on the testimony of a ghost.

Greenbrier, West Virginia, 1897
Beautiful, willful Zona Heaster has always lived in the mountains of West Virginia. Despite her mother’s misgivings, Zona marries Erasmus Trout Shue, the handsome blacksmith who has recently come to Greenbrier County. After weeks of silence from the newlyweds, riders come to the Heasters’ place to tell them that Zona has died from a fall, attributed to a recent illness. Mary Jane is determined to get justice for her daughter. A month after the funeral, she informs the county prosecutor that Zona’s ghost appeared to her, saying that she had been murdered. An autopsy, ordered by the reluctant prosecutor, confirms her claim.

MY LIFE WITH BOB
Flawed Heroine Keeps Book of Books, Plot Ensues
By: Pamela Paul
Published: May 2, 2017
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co.
Format: Audiobook

I have been wanting to read this and saw a few positive reviews for the audio version, read by the author, so I decided to use one of my credits for it. I can't resist a book about books.

Imagine keeping a record of every book you’ve ever read. What would this reading trajectory say about you? With passion, humor, and insight, the editor of The New York Times Book Review shares the stories that have shaped her life.

Pamela Paul has kept a single book by her side for twenty-eight years – carried throughout high school and college, hauled from Paris to London to Thailand, from job to job, safely packed away and then carefully removed from apartment to house to its current perch on a shelf over her desk – reliable if frayed, anonymous-looking yet deeply personal. This book has a name: Bob.

Bob is Paul’s Book of Books, a journal that records every book she’s ever read, from Sweet Valley High to Anna Karenina, from Catch-22 to Swimming to Cambodia, a journey in reading that reflects her inner life – her fantasies and hopes, her mistakes and missteps, her dreams and her ideas, both half-baked and wholehearted. Her life, in turn, influences the books she chooses, whether for solace or escape, information or sheer entertainment.
But My Life with Bob isn’t really about those books. It’s about the deep and powerful relationship between book and reader. It’s about the way books provide each of us the perspective, courage, companionship, and imperfect self-knowledge to forge our own path. It’s about why we read what we read and how those choices make us who we are. It’s about how we make our own stories.

I've purchased other books in this American Girl series and have been quite pleased.

Watch out for the drama trap! This book offers expert insight into drama, from jealousy to gossip to cyber-bullying, and how to deal with it. SPACE BOY AND THE SNOW MONSTER
By: Dian Curtis Regan
Illustrated by: Robert Neubecker
Published: October 10, 2017
Publisher: Boyds Mills Press
Format: Hardcover/Picture Book

I'm not ready to think about snow or Christmas yet, but those books are starting to roll in. I previously reviewed SPACE BOY AND HIS DOG a couple years ago. This is another addition to that series.

In this third book in the Space Boy trilogy, Niko and his trusty dog, Tag, blast off on another outer-space adventure, when suddenly Niko's robot copilot is captured by a snow monster (who looks an awful lot like Niko's annoying sister, Posh). When they reach Planet Ice, Tag is captured by the snow monster as well, leaving Niko to save them both. After defeating a killer bunny and the snow monster's army of snowmen, Niko and his crew race back to Planet Home, just in time for cocoa.

Illustrated in comic-book style and featuring easy-to-read text packed with humor, Space Boy and the Snow Monster is both a thrilling adventure and a celebration of the power of pretend play.
