I immediately knew I was going to love this book based on the page of quotes on the first page of the book. They are all quotes that I love and have written down in various spots to reflect on often.

Brendan and Blake find out they are going with their parents to a funeral for a man from their town. Neither of the boys wants to go, but they parents insist they must go because it is the right thing to do. Mr. Becket was a kind and generous man that lived eighty-eight years helping others and being a good person. At the funeral, the boys learn about the kind of person Mr. Becket was and the legacy his kindness has left on others.

This book instills for kids the importance of making a difference in the lives of others.  It isn't talking about donating hundreds of dollars or asking you take on a certain career, but showing that no matter where you live, how much money you have, or the type of job you do, you can be a good person. Through Mr. Becket's life, we see the examples of how one person's kindness, compassion, and giving spirit can spread throughout a whole community.  This is something we have tried to teach our children by living in a small town and giving of our time and talents at various functions. We don't just live in this community, we are part of this community. Mr. Becket led that kind of life and his legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.

I am excited to share two more books in the WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE series by Wigu Publishing.  I absolutely LOVE this series and highly recommend it for your elementary-aged child!

Jake Learns About the U.S. Army

In this 2nd edition, Jack has a school project and decides to choose being a soldier in the U.S. Army.  This edition features a different cover, more characters, and a bigger storyline.

Once Jake chooses an Army Soldier for his presentation, he leaves nothing out. His dad takes him to a GI Surplus store where Jake gets an education about being a soldier.  He learns the history of soldiers, as far back as George Washington.  Then when he chooses a uniform to wear during his presentation, his father, a former Sergeant in the U.S. Army, shares about the reasons for the different pins, patches, and ribbons. Alongside the story, there are factual information pages explaining different jobs, weapons, and body armor needed for those specific jobs. After Jake gives his presentation to the class, he is surprised when a classmate shares a familiar object during her presentation.  Jake may have just made a new friend.

The book ends with a glossary of Army terms used in the book.  The book is full of illustrations and factual photos to teach the reader all about the U.S. Army, the history, and current duties associated with being a member of the U.S. Army.

Sophia has been begging for a pet to no avail. Her mom refuses every time she asks. Then one rainy night, a cat shows up at their home and Sophia wonders if her wish has finally come true. Even though the cat is scared off the first time, she returns after Sophia is patient and offers food.  After much convincing, Sophia is allowed to take the cat to the veterinarian to make sure she is healthy.  During this visit she is given an education about taking care of her new pet. Before she leaves with her new cat, she is surprised by the veterinarian's diagnosis.

This book is perfect for any animal lover.  The story reminded me of our daughter who sat in our garage for hours to coax a stray kitten that had jumped out of our garbage can. She offered food and sang to it until if finally came to snuggle up next to her.  That kitten is now our pet, Stormy, and is very well loved.

Throughout Sophia's veterinarian visit, the reader can learn about all kinds of animals and different types of care they need including wild animals, dogs, cats, farm animals, and even birds and exotic animals.  The book includes illustrations and photos to help tell the story and teach about all different kinds of animals. Our daughter especially loved the cat pictures.  The end of the book shares tips for becoming a veterinarian as well as what it takes to be a good pet owner.

Noah Tours An Aircraft Carrier

I absolutely love this series from Wigu Publishing.  I have reviewed several of their other books in the series including U.S. Army, Teacher, and Firefighter.

In this book, Noah, his sister Marina, and his Grandpa Ed get to tour an aircraft carrier.  Grandpa Ed is a Navy veteran and is able to give Noah and Marina a complete tour and explanation of all the areas of the ship. Noah and Marina are typical a brother and sister and their antics make the story relatable to children.

Just like the other books in the series, there is plenty of educational information and historical facts included with the story of Noah and his sister. In fact, I learned things about the Navy right along with our daughter as we read it.  Our family has toured an aircraft carrier, but there were things I didn't realize about how the ship is really a city in itself.  Everyone is important on an aircraft carrier from the Captain, the pilots, the deckhands, and the dishwashers.  Everyone's job is important and critical to keeping the crew members and our nation safe.

This book is a great way to share with your child what the Navy is all about whether you have a family member who served, one who is currently serving in the Navy, or not.  It is also a great way to teach your child about those who serve to protect us, in big and small ways, each and every day.

This is another book in the WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE.... series.  I have previously reviewed the US Army and Teacher books.  Click HERE to see those reviews.

Again, I can't say enough good things about this educational and fun series of books.  All kids dream of being something when they grow up and this series of books hits on all those great occupations by sharing a story and fitting in educational aspects of that job.  The kids are learning while reading and don't even know it!

In this story, we are introduced to Will who is worried about going on his class field trip to the fire station. Will has always been afraid of fires and of firefighters.  He thinks about ways he can miss going on the field trip, but as the day arrives he decides to go.  When the Fire Captain announces that he is also afraid of fires, Will is suddenly excited to learn more about fire fighting.  The children are given a tour of the station, allowed to pet the firehouse dogs, introduced to a female firefighter in complete fire fighting gear, allowed to climb in a fire truck, and able to handle a hose spraying water.

Through the field trip the reader is informed about fire safety, the different jobs of a fire fighter that include more than just fighting fires, and how to make a safety plan in your own home.  We are also taught there are many different types of fire fighters and equipment including helicopters and airplanes.

Building on Will's real fear and the excitement of his other classmates, this book will appeal to children who are curious and afraid to admit their fears.  By the end of the story, your child will want to visit their own neighborhood fire station!

Children's Book Review: When I Grow Up I Want To Be....Teacher....U.S. Army

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE...

Carlee Learns a Surprising Lesson

This is one of the first in a series of books showing that kids can grow up to be whatever they want to be.

Carlee isn't too excited about her first day of school because her mom is the teacher for the other 1st grade section.  Carlee is afraid the kids aren't going to like her because her mom is a teacher. In the story we journey through Carlee's first day and experience her nervousness and excitement as she travels through her classes.  One thing Carlee knows for sure, is that she doesn't want to be a teacher like her mom. She was sure all the kids were laughing at her mom and her and she was so embarrassed.  As Carlee imagines being anything BUT a teacher, we are introduced to real life people in those professions like Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong, and Marie Curie.  By the end of the day, Carlee is surprised to learn that the kids love her mom as their teacher.  Carlee realizes having a mom for a teacher isn't so bad and maybe being a teacher is just what she wants to be.

I love how there is a story mixed in with the non-fiction parts of the book.  It is kind of a fiction/non-fiction book. We learn factual information about real people as Carlee travels through her day. Carlee's story is realistic enough for kids to identify with her fears, hesitations and excitement on her first day.  As someone who works in our children's school, I know the embarrassment and excitement that our children feel when I am in the building.

Our 9-year old read this book and enjoyed it.  She liked reading the quotes and information about real people.  She liked Carlee's character and all the jobs she considered being.  Our daughter also wants to be a teacher (as of today) and this book reinforced that for her.

Jake Learns about the U.S. Army

Jake is assigned a project by his teacher to present to the class what he wants to be when he grows up.  He goes through a list of careers, but after talking to his father and learning that both his dad and his grandfather were in the army, Jake decides to do his presentation on a soldier.  Jake's dad takes him to the Army Surplus store to get the items he needs for his presentation.  As Jake goes through the store, we learn the factual information related to our goverment, the uniforms, and the badges and pins. As the daughter of an Army Veteran, I found this information interesting.

Photos of real life soldiers and veterans are shown as we read through the book to give a great perspective on the current job of soldiers as well as the historical piece.  When Jake gives his speech, he not only talks about the job soldiers do, but all the sacrifices they make to protect our country.  The book ends with a glossary explaining the many terms used in the Army.

I really loved both of these books.  I think this is an great series for elementary-aged children to help them explore the opportunities that will be available to them as they grow up.  These books can plant the seeds in their minds and help the child realize they can be whatever they want to be.
I highly recommend these books for classroom as well as personal use.
