A Little Monday Inspiration

Run when you can,
walk if you have to,
crawl if you must;
just never give up.
Dean Karnazes, American Ultramarathon Runner

This has been a good quote for me as I am participating in the Runner's World RunStreak Challenge to complete 40 miles in 40 days. From Memorial Day to July 4th, runners just run one mile/day. It sounds pretty simple, just one mile a day.  But, it has been more difficult that I thought.  Some days I just don't have time for even 1 mile.  So, a few times already, I have had to add it on to the next day or even the next day.

But, as the quote above says, I'm not giving up.  I'm getting those miles in whether I'm running, walking or crawling (haven't resorted to that one yet). I will finish this challenge!

What race, challenge, goal, milestone do you need to finish? It doesn't matter how you get there, but just that you finished! Enjoy the journey, get back on track, and finish that race!

Monday Motivation

For the last 7 days I've been participating in Runner's World Run Streak. I have 7+ miles out of 40 marked off my calendar.  This weekend I walked my miles as a break for my calf that was tight and painful.  As long as I get my mile in, it doesn't matter to me how I get my mile in.  This quote sums up my philosophy on my running.  I many not ever get the best time, but I will finish the race.

Don't worry about your time or your distance, just go.
And, you can always run a little farther.
You won't die if you run to the next mailbox.
Brad Wilkinson, runner

If you need some motivation to get started, remember it doesn't matter how fast you are, how far you go, what you wear, or where you run or walk....it just matters that you get moving

Each time you run, you can push yourself a little farther or a little faster.  You can try that street with a hill or a higher incline on your treadmill.  Run til the next commercial or the next block.

It's not too late.  Join me and finish up the 40 mile challenge and run or walk a mile a day through July 4th.  By then it might just be a habit that will take you farther than you ever imagined!

How I Kicked the Diet Dew Habit

Last Year I Gave Up Diet Mountain Dew for Lent

Today is the first day of the Lenten season.  It spans the time from Ash Wednesday (today) to Easter Sunday (April 20). It is a season of remembering the sacrifice Jesus gave for each one of us and remembering that He came back to life.  It is 40 days to remember the fasting Jesus did during his final days. It is a time for us, as Christians, to reflect, repent, pray, and prepare our hearts for His glorious Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Many Christians decide to give up something in their life during the 40 days of Lent to try to somehow understand Jesus's sacrifice for us. There really is no comparison, but by giving up something we love and desire, we can get be reminded daily of His suffering on the Cross.  Many people will give up a food item like chips, candy, or chocolate.  Or beverages like pop or alcohol or coffee (the horror!). I have also had friends who have given up social media, shopping, or TV.

For many years I was a Diet Mountain Dew drinker.  I knew that it wasn't good for me.  I knew that the aspartame in diet pop was likely the cause of my upset stomachs, headaches and general feeling of blah. I really wanted to give up pop in general, so last year during Lent, I gave up Diet Mountain Dew.  Before Lent, I had gone from drinking one a day to maybe just a few a week. So, I was prepared to go "cold turkey" during Lent.  If you are thinking about giving up pop or any other "bad habit", here are some suggestions.

Steps to Stop Drinking Pop or Diet Pop
  • Reduce your consumption - If you drink 3 a day, start by drinking 2 a day, giving up the one that will be easiest for you to lose.  If you have one in the morning, one at lunch, and one during the afternoon, give up your one at lunch. Do this for one week. If you are just having one pop a day, give up one of your days, for example, no pop on Wednesday.  If you were drinking caffeinated pop, you may experience headaches as you remove the caffeine from your diet.  Drink plenty of water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever to help, if needed.
  • Reduce your consumption again - For the next week remove another pop from your routine.  Either remove a second from your daily intake or from your weekly intake .
  • Add in exercise or a sparkling water to replace pop during one of your times. You may still want that "bubbly" taste during your afternoon break.  Try a drink like La Croix Coconut water that is calorie free but still offers the sweet bubbly flavor.  You may also be feeling sluggish due to the lack of caffeine and/or sugar.  Be sure to check the ingredients of your sparkling beverage so it isn't adding the same amount of sugar as a soda or is "sugar-free" and contains aspartame just like pop.  Drinks like Vitamin Water, Vitamin Water Zero, etc are ones you should avoid.  Talking a brief walk can also be a way to help your mind forget about the pop you aren't drinking.
  • Continue to remove pop from your daily routine until you are down to just one or two a week.  When you feel ready, remove all pop from your daily routine.
I didn't go from several Diet Mountain Dew a week to nothing.  I worked my way down to just a few a week so that when Lent came around, I knew that I was ready to completely remove it.  In giving up the Diet Mountain Dew, I have also pretty much given up all pop.  Occasionally, I will have a Diet Coke as part of a mixed drink.  But, when I am out for dinner, I order water or iced tea and I have found a few drinks that are more exciting than water to drink during the day.  I have greatly increased my daily water intake, but sometimes I just want something more than water.

Some beverages I have found to replace the taste I get from pop:

Both of these Steaz Beverages are very refreshing.  The one on top is a sparkling variety and the one below is just like a flavored iced tea.  I have not be able to find these in any of our local stores.  Since they are considered organic, they may only be available in health food stores.  I have gotten mine on Amazon with my Prime Membership.

The Hint water was one I tried after Amazon offered it as one of their "Lightening Deals" last year.  The water has just a hint of blackberry flavor.  The only odd thing I can say about it is that it seem "thick". I don't know how to describe it other than there seems to be a different consistency than just plain water, even though it tastes exactly like water....with a hint of flavor. I also haven't seen Hint Water in any of our local stores.
I have been an Izze fan for awhile.  They are nice small cans and are a refreshing drink anytime of day.  My favorites are the Blackberry and Orange. My husband likes the Grapefruit one. Izze is available at Target and Hy-Vee in my area. It comes in cans as well as glass bottles.

I am new to the La Croix fan club.  I have been telling all my friends about it.  I love the Coconut and Peach/Pear varieties.  I have mixed the Coconut with Simply Raspberry Lemonade for a little variety as well.

Benefits Are Worth It

There are many benefits to reducing and/or removing the consumption of Diet and Regular Pop.  If this is something you struggle with, I hope that you will consider these steps and ask a friend, a co-worker, your spouse, or even your children to support you.  It won't be easy, but I promise you won't regret it.  From someone who hasn't had a Diet Mountain Dew in a year, having just one sip made me realize how much I don't miss it.  I wonder how I ever drank the stuff in the first place.  It just didn't even taste good to me anymore. My headaches are few. My upsets stomachs are nearly non-existent.  My mid-afternoon sluggish moments are revived by running on the treadmill rather than running to the fridge.

You can do it! I know you can!

A Little Monday Inspiration - Move-mber

Acknowledge all of your small victories. They will eventually add up to something great.
Kara Goucher, American Long-Distance Runner

I think this fits so well with my 3 words of inspiration - Patience, Perseverance, and Positivity.  Nothing happens all at once and nothing comes without hard work. Keep working at your goals, checking off the small steps as you work toward the big leaps and eventually you will get there!

I took off the last two weeks from really any exercise.  I know that isn't persevering or being positive, but I just didn't make it a priority and life was busy.

I thought it would be fun to make a challenge for myself for the month of November.  I thought it would call it.....

MOVE-EMBER

Each day in November, I will get some sort of "movement" into my day.  Sadly, I wasn't able to get any in the first 3 days because we were traveling and visiting family.  But, starting November 4th, my goal is to "MOVE" for at least 20 minutes each day.  Who can't do something for 20 minutes?  We all have 20 minutes that we waste doing something else every day.   Why not waste it moving????

Anyone want to join me?

A Little Monday Inspiration - Final Challenge Check In

Life has no limitations, except the ones you make.
Les Brown, author and TV personality

I am certainly the only person who can limit myself.  It is my fault if I don't make time to run on the treadmill. It is my fault if I don't push myself harder.  It is my fault if I give up.

This is my final post on my Living and Active 5 Week Challenge with www.PEAK313.com.  I have completed the challenge and done what needed to be done.  But, did I push myself as hard as I could have? A few times.  Did I take the easy way a few times?  Yes.  But, I did complete the challenge.  Do I feel or look different? Not really.  But, I can do more push-ups in a row.  I can run longer.  So, there was some improvement.  Do I need to keep pushing myself and go another 5 weeks?  YES!  Am I going to miss the accountability? Yes.  But, really, the only person I need to be accountable to is myself.  I know what I need to do. I just have to make the time and effort to get it done.

I'm thankful for the challenge to force myself to get active. Now I need to make sure my eating and my activity are in line with each other.  Some days I just feel like I break even.  With the holidays coming up, it will not be easy, but on those days where food, family and fellowship will win over...then I hope I at least break even!

Here is to finishing 2013 stronger! Still living with the motto:

Patience
Perseverance
Positivity

A Little Monday Inspiration and Week Four Check In

No one is born a perfect runner.  And none of us will become one. But through incremental steps, we can become better runners. And that's the beauty of our sport: There are no shortcuts, nothing is given to us; we earn every mile, and we earn every result.
Peter Magill, 2010 USA Masters 5K champion

Last week I completed Week 4 in PEAK313's Living and Active Challenge.  I pushed through and spent most of the week sore and/or in pain.  I am using muscles that haven't been worked in awhile, but that is a good thing.  Friday morning, I really didn't want to get on the treadmill.  I had a lot on my plate for the day and it would have been easy to ignore it, but I got on and even did more than I "had" to in order to complete the challenge.  I am so thankful for the accountability of this challenge and will miss that after next week.  I'm hoping the accountability in my head and in my workout log will be enough to keep me moving.

With a very busy week ahead and the final week in the five week challenge, I am a bit nervous about how I am going to work everything in, but I also know that I can't quit now.  It may not be a perfect week and some days I may want to just do enough to get by, but like the above quote says, there are no shortcuts and I have to earn my way to the finish line.  That's what I will keep focusing on this week!

Perseverance

Living and Active Week Three Check In

Running isn't about how far you go but how far you've come.
Bart Yasso, author/marathon trainer/runner

My week 3 check in fits in perfectly with the above quote.  When I first got my treadmill and started running, I really could only run for 30 seconds at a time.  I can now run for for minutes at a time and at higher speeds. Each time it gets easier. I can get sucked into a program I am watching and literally forget I am running. Other times it is a struggle and I am watching the clock and distance until I can stop.  But, knowing how far I have come is what keeps me going.

With my birthday this past week, my eating wasn't so great.  Birthday cupcakes, homemade strawberry pie, my mom's lemon meringue pie, and cheesecake all made for me, so I had to eat them! But, this week, I can get back on track with my eating and push myself a bit more on my workouts.  As of now I don't have a very busy week and should be able to easily work the time into my schedule.

Week 4 is going to be awesome!

Week 2 Complete

Last week was a hectic week with subbing and after school/evening activities so I am glad I got a head start to the week with getting my workouts in.

I was super pumped because the week before I had attempted to do a "pyramid workout" consisting of a succession of 25-20-15-10-5 reps of squats, push-ups, crunches, and lunges.  Last week I only made it to the 15 section, but this week I completed the whole thing.  I wanted to quit, but once I got to the 10s, I knew I could do it and kept pushing myself.  My legs were like jello afterwards, but the feeling of accomplishment was worth it.

A Little Monday Inspiration and My Week 1 Check In

I finished Week 1 of the Living and Active challenge with Peak 313.  I have been pretty sore this weekend after doing some different exercises and getting out of the "treadmill box". I'm looking forward to pushing myself forward another week.  This quote really sums up my thoughts from the week....

It's important to remember that each footstrike carries you forward, not backward.  And every time you put on your running shoes you are different in some way than you were the day before.

A Little Monday Inspiration

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.
Beverly Sills, American Operatic Soprano

As I begin Day 1 of my 5 Week Living and Active Challenge,(See Post HERE) this quote reminded me of my focus for this next 5 weeks.  This is exactly what I needed to hear.  No Short Cuts.  Do the work. Make the effort. See results.  I won't see changes in my body or even my weight, right away.  I can't take short cuts or the easy way out and still expect those results.  But, I am worth it and I need to stick with it for the long haul!

I'm Joining the Living and Active Challenge

Through our 90-100 degree heat the last couple weeks, I've been such a slacker on getting exercise.  So, when I saw Clare from PEAK313.com was going to run another 5 week challenge, I knew it was just the motivation I needed.

I completed this challenge in September/October last year.  Even though I completed it, I really didn't push myself as hard as I could have.  I basically just did the minimum effort needed to say I was accountable.  I traveled a lot in October last year (I turned 40) and life was kind of hectic.  Not to say that our life isn't hectic now....4 different sports that our kids are involved in right now, my own volunteer obligations, book review deadlines, and general housework and meal fixing...all those typical mom jobs.  But, I have looked ahead and know when I can fit these workout times in.  Some days I know I won't be able to get one in, but the challenge requires 4 days/week and I KNOW I can manage that.  I just have to make it a priority.

I think what always gets me so frustrated in these challenges is that I am not seeing a difference.  What I need to realize is that it is more about forming a habit, making my health a priority, and gradually seeing and feeling different.

My motto for these next 5 weeks is going to be...

Patience,
Perseverance,
and Positivity.

What I also appreciate about this particular challenge is that it isn't just about the fitness aspect, but also the spiritual aspect of your health. Each week there will be a verse to memorize and a short devotional based on that verse.  It really helps you focus and get in the right mind-set not just related to your fitness, but your whole mind and health.

I plan to continue running on the treadmill experimenting with sprints and inclines, riding my new bike(I need to tell you about that yet), using my Jillian Michaels DVDs, and even using Clare's workouts that she posts on her site.  By changing it up a bit, I hope to not get so bored.  Plus I have plenty of shows/movies I want to watch while on the treadmill.

So, you are welcome to join in with me in this 5 week challenge.  To join in on Clare's page, please click HERE.  Let me know in the comments so I can cheer you on!

Can you commit to 25 minutes, 4 days/week for 5 weeks?

I know I can do it!  I won't regret it!
