Product Review: Cave Tools Rib and Roast Grill Rack and a Coupon Code

Cave Tools offers superior grilling tools without a superior price. All their products have been diligently designed with the customer in mind. Their tools are designed for durability, ease of use, as well as quick clean up. I previously reviewed the Cave Tools Kabob Set (see review, HERE) and even bought my husband their smoker box for Christmas. 

The Cave Tools Rib and Roast Grill Rack was designed after customers had complained about grill racks from competitors. Some of their complaints included weak welding that fell apart after a few grilling sessions, grill racks that were too far apart for ribs to sit vertically, or the rack was too big for the grill cover to close. Cave Tools listened and created a grill rack that addresses all those concerns.

Its unique design allows it to be used for ribs or flipping it over allows it to be used for roasts. I have so far, only tried it with ribs and my husband loves it.

We have a Weber charcoal grill and we had no trouble with the rack fitting on our grill or closing the lid.

The ribs cooked evenly and the rack allowed for ease of basting since the ribs were laying at an angle.

As you can see, our ribs turned out evenly cooked and they were quite delicious. Clean up was a cinch and took hardly any scrubbing at all. This product has made cooking ribs on the grill so much easier and we have used it several times since trying it out for this review. I'm anxious to try it for a roast as well yet this summer. This is another excellent product from Cave Tools and I would recommend this product as well as any of their grilling tools for the grill master in your family.

Buzz Bernard holds a special spot in my book-loving heart. His first book was one of the first books I read for the purpose of giving a review. You can see my review of EYEWALL, HERE. I was interested in it because the setting was St. Simons Island, GA. I have family there and it is where my husband and I spent our honeymoon. At the time, I took a chance on a new author and he took a chance on me as a new reviewer. Then two years later, I interviewed him to promote his second book, PLAGUE. He is a delightful person and I enjoyed that opportunity. You can see my interview, HERE. Now, here I am reviewing his fifth book five years after it all began.

"Buzz" Bernard is a former senior meteorologist for The Weather Channel and prior to that, he was a weather officer with the Air Force. His weather experience is lengthy and makes it only natural for him to write about weather catastrophes. In his newest book, CASCADIA, his setting is the beautiful Oregon Coastline. Bernard introduces us to Rob, a geologist, who has "visions" of a megaquake followed by a tsunami that hits his beloved Manzanita area. The quake appears in his dreams as bigger than the one researchers have studied that hit the same coastal area in the 1700's. Johnny is one of those men who has been studying the area, looking for the buried treasure left behind by the Native Americans after the quake hit in the 1700's. We also meet a retired Air Force veteran who comes to Manzanita to make amends with his past. These characters and others converge on Manzanita over 4th of July weekend and their lives will collide in a way none of them expected.

CASCADIA is fast-paced and doesn't bog you down with the technical side of earthquakes. It gives you enough information to understand the devastating effects of a megaquake on the entire coastline. In the Prologue, we are given a folktale that has been passed down through generations of Native Americans foretelling the power of a megaquake and forthcoming tsunami. The "Thunderbird and Whale" narrative gives the reader a perspective of understanding the weather long before we had seismology and meteorologists.  

CASCADIA is predictable in the way that murder mysteries are predictable. You know that a murder is going to happen you just don't know who is going to die and who committed the murder. I know enough about Bernard's books that I know the earthquake is coming or there wouldn't be a story to tell. You just don't know how all the characters are going to connect and what will happen to each of them once the quake hits.

Bernard packs a powerful story into a quick read that can easily be consumed over a weekend. You just may not want to read it if you are traveling to the Northwest Coastal Region. Save it for when you get home.

Book Review: I Let You Go By Clare Mackintosh

This is the newest in the list of thrillers with an "unreliable narrator" and a gripping story that will keep you turning the pages to find out what REALLY happened.

Jenna Gray is walking home with her son when she lets go of his hand for one second. In that second he darts in front of a car and is killed while the driver speeds away, never to return. Jenna can't believe what just happened and is overcome with grief. In the dark of night, she leaves her life behind to start over in a tiny Welsh Village. In the meantime, two detectives are trying to find the hit-and-run driver. All leads seem to be coming to a dead end and Ray has to close the case, even though he and his partner Kate, can't seem to get the case out of their mind. The twists and turns of the case baffle them until a lead takes them to someone they never expected to find.

This thriller is fast-paced and tells you the story from Jenna's perspective and then flips over to Ray and Kate's story so that you always know what is going on in Jenna's life and the investigation. Jenna's grief over losing her son and the blame she places on herself seeps off the pages. You can imagine how she wants to disappear and start life over knowing that she will never be able to truly start over. Mackintosh's descriptions of Jenna's nightmares, the way she is "walking through molasses" and how everything is the same and yet different...forever changed, give you a visual and painful understanding of her desperation.

Once she leaves, you start to have hope for her as she begins a new life in Wales and meets some people she can consider friends. As an artist, she finds a way to work art back into her life in a way that is different from what she did before. She finds a new energy and starts to think that this can be her new life. Then, you are suddenly slapped across the face with a twist so shocking, you will want to scream at the author while knowing that you have to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next. This is what really made the book for me. I didn't see it coming for one second and then when it did, I became so absorbed in the rest of the novel that I forgave the author for giving me that jolt.

There are definitely some disturbing parts to this story and it touches on topics that can be difficult for some to read about. I don't want to give anything away because I want every reader to have the same reaction I did. Even knowing that there was a twist to come, didn't make it any less shocking for me.

Mackintosh has found her way into the novelist world after working twelve years for the police force. I'm sure she has a wealth of information at her fingertips to continue surprising readers with thrillers for years to come. I LET YOU GO is her debut novel and I SEE YOU, her second thriller, will debut in July.

If you have been hearing "I'm bored" a few too many times this summer, give this book to your kids and assign them a few magic tricks to perform after dinner. I guarantee they will put their devices down and stay busy perfecting their magic.

Just like the title states, there are thirty tricks to learn and perform ranging from card tricks to disappearing coins, to string and knot tricks, to visual tricks of the eye. All of them are easy for an elementary-aged child to learn and perform. The pages are full of pictures as well as step-by-step directions on how to carry out the trick and then a page giving the reader the real "secret" behind the trick.

The child is thrilled to learn the secret to the magic and then feel like they have one up on their parents or siblings while performing the trick.

Our daughter really loved the "Do as I Do" card trick and performed her magic to anyone that visited. Once she read the instructions and did a few practice run-throughs, she was ready to try it out. I was surprised how quickly she made the magic seem easy.

If you have a budding magician or a child that is looking for a challenge, I highly recommend this book of magic tricks. Performing magic encourages critical thinking and planning as well as creativity. I could see teachers using this as a quiet learning time in the classroom or homeschool parents using it as part of a science or art lesson. You never know when having a magic trick up your child's sleeve will come in handy! They may just find a hidden talent they didn't know they had.

Book Review: The 4X4 Diet By Erin Oprea

I think I first heard about this book on Instagram with a few people I follow, including Carrie Underwood, the American Idol turned Country Music Star. The concept interested me and so I ordered it when it became available and read it right away, which is a rare thing. Unfortunately, it has taken me several months to write the review for it and now I almost need to read it again. Even though I haven't started any of the plans or ideas presented in the book, I really liked the philosophy behind it.

Oprea is a celebrity trainer, including the trainer for Carrie Underwood who wrote the Foreward to the book. Oprea's motto is "lean and clean" and her program offers the secrets to eating clean and getting lean through her Tabata workouts. She states that by following her plan, you'll have less bloating, increased muscle definition, improved cardiovascular performance, and a boosted metabolism.  These are all things I am interested in and are what drew me to her plan. But, I have to admit, I haven't started her plan....yet. I have tried a couple of her recipes and workouts, but nothing as far as a plan goes.

What I really appreciated about Oprea's book is her explanations. She doesn't just tell you to cut down on sodium, but WHY you should. Oprea states that eating excess sodium causes our body to retain more water, which leaves to bloating and looking puffy. Then she goes on to explain the difference between salt-free, reduced sodium, and no salt added so you can understand the labels that food makers try to trick you with. She lists out foods high in sodium and how to ration out your sodium throughout the day.

A good thirty plus pages offer recipes and food suggestions with the end of the book giving you a week by week look at food and exercises to take you through the four-week plan. When I first heard about the book, I had no idea what a Tabata exercise was. Tabata is a four-minute workout that is broken down into eight rounds of intense exercise for twenty seconds with ten seconds of rest. That sounds pretty doable. The best part is Oprea explains every exercise she suggests.....with photos. I am exercise-illiterate and so when someone says "mountain climbers" or "windmills", I want to know how to do that exercise properly. I also like the variety of exercises she offers so that you never get bored and your muscles don't get used to doing the same thing all the time.

I am really thrilled with Oprea's simple approach to getting healthy and lean through easy recipes and real food choices along with short bursts of exercise. This is a book I purchased for my own enjoyment and one I will be keeping to refer to over time.

Books that Came My Way in June 2016

Starting this week, I can finally see what I was hoping my Summer would look like. My days are no longer jam-packed with meetings or places I need to be. I started the summer traveling to Canada with our high school band, then after we returned I had a lot to catch up on at home after being gone on the trip and subbing at school for the last few weeks of school. We are also in the middle of serious construction at our house, so I've been packing up rooms and making decisions on cabinets, flooring, counters, etc. Then I took a re-certification class all last week for my substitute teaching license. Oh, and I've taken on co-chairing Prom, so that has added a few things to my plate as well. But, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and aside from dealing with construction and making those related decisions, my schedule is pretty open. I've been reading, but finding time to write reviews for books that I read a month ago has been tough. I may have to write some mini-reviews just to get them out to you.

I've been turning down quite a few book requests this summer which has been sad. But, I have to realize how limited my time is and swallow my pride a bit. I'm so far behind on the books I've already received that I can't, in good faith, accept much more until I catch up a bit. I am anxious to spend time on my porch or patio reading over these 50 days of summer that our left. I hope books have been in your hands this summer and you've been sharing the good ones with your friends. That is ultimately why I started reviewing books because I want to share my love of reading and all the great books that I hear about with you! 

I'm only going to read books that I am interested in. If it isn't working for me I'll move on. I can't get to every book that comes my way, but at least I can share them with you here. I hope to review them just as soon as I can.

This one reminded me a bit of WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, which is one of my all-time favorite books. It definitely is piquing my interest!

I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book. It one of those books that are part of the new trend in thrillers and the synopsis reminds me of books like THE WIDOW, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, or ONE STEP TOO FAR that have a twist that will shock the reader. The subject matter obviously involves domestic violence which can be hard for me to read at times. So, if it becomes too difficult, I'll have to just set it aside for awhile. 

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace.

He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. Though, you’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult because you realize Jack and Grace are never apart.

Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.

Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

Seriously, this book is so....AWESOME! It covers everything you ever wanted to know about our great country. From our great beginning through all our trials and wars, to the present, nothing has been left out. This book is targeted to kids but the whole family will enjoy reading through it. I sure did!

Of course, my favorite parts of the book involved the historical events that made our country great including the Women's Suffrage Movement and the first immigrants who came through Ellis Island. 

As you can see, the pages are full of easy to read details and actual photographs. Younger kids will enjoy the bullet texts while older kids and adults will find the paragraphs full of interesting information.

I sat down one evening and went through each page of this book, enamoured with the photos and facts reminding me of things I had forgotten and other times teaching me things I somehow didn't know. I could not put it down and was anxious to see what the next chapter would teach me. In fact, just the night before I had read this book, we were talking with friends about the history of the Disney movies and the order they were made. If only I had read this page before that evening!

One chapter features each state including its nickname and claim to fame. Another section features the wild animals that inhabit the states and regions of our country.

I also found the inventions page interesting as I learned how certain regular household items were developed and who the inventor was. From jobs to family life to the Olympics to our Natural Wonders, this book covers all you need to know about the United States of America. This book should be in every classroom, library, and home.
