THE CHRISTMAS CATS FEAR FOR THE DEER is the fourth story in the Christmas Cats series. I have previously reviewed the second and third story. To see those reviews, click on the titles of the stories below.
THE CHRISTMAS CATS CHASE CHRISTMAS RATS
THE CHRISTMAS CATS ENCOUNTER BATS

This time, the Christmas Cats have to handle a problem involving the deer in a local park. The deer in Scott County Park are harming the trees by eating all the bark. So, the hunters have come out to take care of the problem in the park. The Christmas Cats are summoned to save the deer from the hunter and find them a new, safe place to live.

Many of us adults can relate to the problems deer can cause in our yards and gardens. This story shows the other side of deer desperately trying to find a place to live and eat during the long winter months. Through rhyme and humor, the Christmas Cats are able to find the perfect place for the deer to live that will keep everyone happy. The illustrations are vivid and show the personalities of the cats and the deer. The deers' faces show fear, disappointment, and happiness without even reading the words on the pages. This story shares the lessons of helping others and the determination to find the best solution. Lower-elementary-aged children will enjoy these tales of the Christmas Cats.

This book makes another great addition to the series as well as to your Christmas book library. The end of the book includes a coloring page and maze. For additional fun and games related to the books in the series, visit www.thexmascats.com.

#52ListsProject - Things That Make Me Feel Peaceful

I purchased the book, The 52 Lists Project for my 43rd birthday. The book focuses on weekly journaling based on lists.  I love making lists and thought this sounded like a great way to remember a year. I plan to complete  a list every week for this next year. Even though the journal begins in Winter with Week 1, I started my list during Fall with Week 40. So, I'll be moving through the book a bit backwards, which is hard for my organized brain, but I didn't want to be writing about winter topics in spring or summer in winter.

I'll be sharing my lists here, hopefully one a week. To see my previous lists, click on the tag 52 Lists Project at the bottom of this post.  It's my hope that by sharing my lists, you'll get to know me a bit better and maybe be reminded of something that brings you joy!  Some weeks the topics may be too personal to share completely on here, but I'll at least tell you about the lists and some of the things on it.

At the end of each list, the author offers an idea to expand on that week's list. This week's list is THINGS THAT MAKE YOU FEEL PEACEFUL and her action plan is take a few hours or a whole day completely away from technology to instead do something by yourself that makes you feel calm and at peace. Even though I can't commit a full day to some of these things, I can do some of them at some point. Just Sunday, I was able to wake up to no alarm and that was such a peaceful way to start my morning.

If you are interested in learning more about THE 52 LISTS PROJECT, click HERE to be taken to the author's website. You can also purchase the book, HERE.

THINGS THAT MAKE ME FEEL PEACEFUL

Sitting on the porch listening to the birds
Crawling into bed after a long, exhausting day
Going to bed knowing I don't have to set the alarm
Listening to my favorite hymns
Spending time in God's Word
Prayer
Being on the beach, listening to the waves
Hugs from my kids
Snuggling with my husband
A completely finished To-Do List
Going "Home" to my parents
Watching a favorite movie

A Perfectly Peaceful Day

Awake to no alarm
Drink coffee leisurely on the porch while the birds sing
Pancakes for breakfast with the kids
Back to the porch to read
Take a walk with a friend
Take a nap
Go out for a leisurely dinner
Popcorn and favorite movie at home
Snuggling with my husband

That sounds like a perfect day in my book! Even though it is too chilly to be on my porch now, I could still add any of these to my day and find a peaceful moment. I hope that you can take time to add some peaceful moments to your week!

Book Review: The Italian Wife By Kate Furnivall

THE ITALIAN WIFE

By: Kate Furnivall

Published: October 6, 2015

Publisher: Berkley

Fiction/Historical Fiction

Fans of Kate Furnivall's THE RUSSIAN CONCUBINE will be thrilled to be wrapped up in her next novel, set in Mussolini's Italy. Isabella Berotti is a widow, after her husband, a Blackshirt in Mussolini's army, was shot and killed. Ten years later, Isabella is now an architect, building for one of the new Italian communities after the draining of the Pontine Marshes. While sitting at a cafe during a beautiful autumn morning, a woman approaches Isabella and asks her to watch her daughter for a moment, briefly mentioning her dead husband. Isabella then watches the woman step off the edge of a tower to her death. Isabella is determined to find out the connection between this woman and her husband. A photographer, working for Mussolini's government, documents the woman's death and agrees to help Isabella figure out their connection and protect the child left behind.

Even though this is a fictional account of Mussolini's regime, it is based on factual events. Furnivall's research is thorough and tells a spell-binding story of greed, control, and betrayal. It is both suspenseful and emotional. I was fairly uneducated about Mussolini's reign during the 1930's and was appalled by the similarities to Hitler and his brutality.

Isabella was an impressive woman, working as an architect during a time when women were not valued beyond motherhood in society. Isabella was fiercely loyal to her father, her husband, and to her country. As she realizes the destruction and deception happening in her community she risks everything to get to the bottom of it.

Roberto, the photographer, has a dark past, but becomes Isabella's confidant and partner while they try to find out who is behind the corruption.  Other secondary characters are well-developed, offering key insights and adding to the development of the story.

The descriptions of Italy and the architectural designs are vividly detailed. The plot develops quickly and each chapter adds another layer that will keep you turning the pages. The romance that develops between two characters doesn't dominate the story, but yet enhances it by Furnivall's details. THE ITALIAN WIFE grabs your attention from the start and holds it until the final page is turned.

Note: There are two covers depending on which website you look at. I'm not sure why, as I feel cover recognition is important to a book when it first debuts. I actually like the above cover better, but the one below is used on the author's website. It's possible the below cover is the UK version since the author is from Wales. ~ Update: Author Kate Furnivall has confirmed that the cover below is the UK version.

Kate Furnivall was raised in Penarth, a small seaside town in Wales. Her mother, whose own childhood was spent in Russia, China and India, discovered at an early age that the world around us is so volatile, that the only things of true value are those inside your head and your heart. These values Kate explores in her bestselling first novel, THE RUSSIAN CONCUBINE. Kate is the author of eight novels. Her books have been translated into more than twenty languages and have been on the New York Times Bestseller list. For more on Furnivall, visit her webisite, HERE. Children's Book Review: Animals Have Feelings, Too! By Karen Lee Stevens

ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS, TOO!
Exploring Emotions from A to Z

By: Karen Lee Stevens

Illustrated by: Teri Rider

Published: 2011

Publisher: All for Animals

I'm participating in the Pump Up Your Book, book tour for ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS TOO!. To see other stops on the tour including guests posts, interviews and book reviews, click HERE

Sandy is a wonderful family dog. We follow along on her busy day going for walks, taking naps, and even coming across some pesky raccoons. This book is more about just being happy, sad, or angry. Stevens explores the emotions of envious, jolly, worried and even, zonked. Each emotion is clearly shown through the expertly done illustrations and then explained in words through both a definition and Sandy's behaviors. Even though this book is mainly about Sandy, the dog, you will see emotions from other animals including Willow, the cat.  Children will find the story funny, silly, and enjoyable and one they will want to read again and again. Parents can use this book to help their child name and express their feelings.

Stevens' book is an absolute delight and one I will be keeping in my stash to share with my nieces and nephews and well as my friend's children when they come to play. Stevens has also written a lesson plan for teachers to go along with this book including coloring pages and activities for use with a feelings unit in school. This book will definitely be going along on subbing dates in the lower elementary classes for use when I need a time-filler.

All the proceeds from the sale of this book support ARF! (Animals + Reading = Fun), a nonprofit organization started by Karen Lee Stevens. She launched ARF! in 2013 to have dog therapy teams visit children in grades K-6 at several Title I schools and libraries throughout Santa Barbara, California. The kids are allowed to read to the dogs and has been a huge hit with the children....and the dogs too! For more about the foundation, click HERE.

Product Review: Eukonic Organic Coconut Oil Supplement

Coconut Oil offers numerous benefits to your body including to your heart, skin, cholesterol levels, and weight management. Working coconut oil into your diet on a daily basis isn't always an option. Having the ability to take a coconut oil supplement on a daily basis allows you to make sure you are getting the daily benefits of coconut oil.

Each softgel contains 1000mg of Organic Coconut Oil. The coconut oil is cold pressed which has been proven to maintain the highest quality and nutritional benefits of the oil.

I've been taking these Eukonic Organic Coconut Oil Supplements for the last few months. What changes have I noticed?
  • My hair has grown faster
  • My nails are stronger and have grown faster
  • I feel fuller, longer when taking the supplements
  • After a recent blood test, my HDL (good) cholesterol is much higher

Coconut oil is the new "superfood". I love adding coconut oil to my smoothies or using it to cook eggs. But, I can't do that every day and I love knowing I am still getting the benefits of coconut oil in my body every day. Even though the supplements are large, they are softgels which allow them to dissolve fast in your system. Honestly, I am not thrilled with the size since I don't like swallowing pills anyway, but reminding myself of the benefits outweighs the annoyance of the larger pill.

Seeing the changes in my cholesterol levels was a unexpected benefit to taking this supplement. I am thrilled with the results of taking this product and highly recommend adding it to your daily vitamin regimen. Eukonic offers a 100% money back guarantee, but I can't imagine you would need it. These softgels will offer your body both seen and unseen benefits that you don't want to miss out on.

To find out more about Eukonic Organic Coconut Oil Softgels, check out their website, HERE. You can also purchase them on Amazon, HERE.

Caution: I am not a health professional. You should check with your doctor before starting any new supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, take prescription medications, or have a medical condition. These results may not happen for everyone who takes this product.

Thanks to Eukonic for sending me a bottle of Coconut Oil Supplements for the purpose of this review. This review is my honest opinion. I was not compensated in any way for this review. Book Review: The Truth According to Us By Annie Barrows

THE TRUTH ACCORDING TO US

By: Annie Barrows

Published: June 9, 2015

Publisher: The Dial Press

Fiction/Historical Fiction

Annie Barrows is the well-loved author of the children's IVY & BEAN series. She also received rave reviews after writing one of my all-time-favorite books, THE GUERNSEY AND LITERARY POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY. That made me extremely excited for her newest book. Unfortunately, it didn't interest me as much as I had hoped.

Layla Beck is the spoiled daughter of a US Senator. When the Senator has had enough of his daughter's spending and ungracious attitude, he cuts her off. During the hot summer of 1938, he gets his brother to give her a job with the Federal Writers' Project in the small town of Macedonia, West Virginia. Layla, who hasn't written more than a letter to her friends, is charged with interviewing and writing the stories about the history of the Macedonia. Little does she know that the family she has moved in with has their own secrets to add to the town's history. The Romeyn family is wary of Layla, especially twelve-year-old Willa. She is desperate for her father's attention and on the rare occasion when Felix is actually home, he seems to give all his attention to Layla. Willa becomes determined to find out what her father is up to on his long absences and Layla is determined to find out the secrets of the town. The two end up colliding on the same story and only one of them knows the real truth.

Barrows story ebbs and flows for me. What I loved about Barrows previous novel was the epistolary style of writing and was hoping for that again. There were several letters in the book, but it wasn't enough to make it a main part of story. Since the story is told from Willa's point of view, I found it hard at times to follow along. At over five hundred pages, I feel like the story has to move along at a quick pace to keep me reading and this one did not. I put it down several times and came back to it after reading something else. If the middle of the book would have been as interesting as the first and last third, I would have had it finished in no time.

Barrows created some pretty uniquely interesting characters including mysterious Felix, Willa's sister, Bird, their aunt Jottie who has raised them while giving up her dreams to do so, and the funny Aunts, Mae and Minerva. But with so many characters and various story lines, it was hard to focus and the secrets dragged out too long in the novel.  While charming and historically compelling, it just didn't invest me into the characters or their stories.

Annie Barrows - source -
Annie grew up in Northern California, and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, with a degree in Medieval History. Unable to find a job in the middle ages, she decided upon a career as an editor, eventually landing at Chronicle Books in San Francisco, where she was in charge of "all the books that nobody in their right mind would publish." After earning an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Mills College, Annie wrote (as Ann Fiery) a number of books for grown-ups about such diverse subjects as fortune-telling (she can read palms!), urban legends (there are no alligators in the sewer!), and opera (she knows what they're singing about!). In 2003, Annie grew weary of grown-ups, and began to write for kids, which she found to be way more fun. For more on Barrows, check out her website, HERE

Book Review: Taming the To-Do List By Glynnis Whitwer

TAMING THE TO-DO LIST
How to Choose Your Best Work Every Day

By: Glynnis Whitwer

Published: August 18, 2015

Publisher: Revell

Non-Fiction/Christian

Are you constantly making to-do lists and moving the same items over week to week? Do you look at your to-do list and immediately do the easiest thing just so you can check something off? Do you put off projects and deadlines until the last minute?

If you answered "Yes" to any of those questions, then my advice to you is to read this book. I was shocked while reading this book and realizing Whitwer was speaking directly to me. I am guilty of making to-do lists and constantly ignoring the bigger or harder tasks. It is much easier to finish the smaller and easier items and feel accomplished because I scratched off three or four things. But, the underlying problem is that I am really procrastinating on the bigger things I need to be doing.

Whitwer makes this point because she too has avoided the bigger and harder projects. For years she found ways to avoid and make excuses for not writing this very book. But, by naming her issue, "procrastination", and then finding ways to work through those bigger tasks she obviously, was able to finish this book as well as a number of other elusive projects, Whitwer found she was less anxious, less overcommitted, and accomplished more by completing the steps she outlines in her book. Her first step was to remove some of her overwhelming commitments from her life and releasing the fear of letting those tasks go. Also, removing the perfectionist piece from any project allows more room for things to get done versus getting done perfectly.

Her book of tips and advice applies to so many areas of my life. I never thought of myself as a procrastinator until I realized that is exactly what I am. Her tip for making a project list and then breaking each project down into its own task list was a "light bulb moment" for me. I have been moving the same tasks from my to-do list each week with no real intention of completing them. By, breaking each larger project up into steps allows me to not see it as such a huge project and inspires me to start and end each step along the way to actually finishing the whole project. Why I didn't figure this out before is beyond me.

Whitwer is a Christian and bases a lot of her advice on wisdom from Scriptures. God's purpose for us is clearing detailed through the Bible and she relies on it to help her overcome her procrastinating tendencies. I found these passages reassuring and motivating as well.

I will be keeping TAMING THE TO-DO LIST close by my desk, referring to it often when I am feeling overcommitted, anxious, and weighed down by projects. Her wise words of advice will be sure to push me to get the job done.

Product Review: Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Water

A couple months ago I reviewed Cocozia 100% Organic Coconut Water.
You can see that review HERE. Even though I liked it, I prefer to mix the coconut water with sparkling water or lemonade. When they asked if I would try their Chocolate Coconut Water, I was honestly, hesitant. It just didn't sound very appealing to me.

But, I was completely surprised! I LOVE Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Water.

The Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Water is 100% Organic. It contains potassium, magnesium and other electrolytes to replenish your body. If you like drinking chocolate milk after a run or workout, I recommend trying this and see how replenished you feel! Chocolate Coconut Water is perfect for those that need to stay dairy-free, but like the taste of chocolate milk.

I can drink the Chocolate Coconut Water right out of the container and it tastes almost identical to chocolate milk. I even had each of the kids and my husband try it and they all agreed that it was really good. For my husband to say that coconut water is good is a HUGE ENDORSEMENT!

Besides drinking Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Waterstraight, I tried making a smoothie out of it.

Chocolate Coconut Peanut Butter Smoothie
8 oz Cocozia Chocolate Coconut Water
2 TBS Peanut Butter
1 Scoop Vanilla Protein Powder
1 Scoop Chia Seeds
Several Ice Cubes
Blend and Drink.

I usually don't like chocolate or peanut butter smoothies and stick to fruit based ones, but I really liked this smoothie. It was tasty and filling, keeping me full all morning.
