Life Here in Our Corner of the World

Patrick in Lane 1

Thanks to those of you who wished us luck and offered good wishes for Patrick's trip to the Iowa State Track Meet. It was quite the experience and one I'm sure he will never forget. Even though he didn't run his best race ever, he ran on that famous blue oval and had a blast.

He finished 21st in 3A in 10:10.45 which is a great time. I have no doubt his Cross Country and Track season next year will be full of success.

This week closes out the 2016/2017 school year for us. After this week, our focus will shift towards preparing for graduation and college for Patrick. We have numerous college visits to fit in this summer. We need to start looking at scholarship applications. I have a HUGE project list of items to work on in preparation for Patrick's graduation party. I am sure many of you are thinking...um...that is a year away. But, if I am anywhere as close as busy next school year as I was this year, I have to do as much as I can this summer. Thankfully, I have a pretty light summer. I will be joining the band/choir students on their trip to DC/NYC in early June and then after that, I'm free to run my own schedule pretty much. After last summer of the major house remodel taking over our lives, I am frankly, quite thrilled to have a peaceful, relaxing summer.

Yesterday, we watched many special students graduate. So many of these students feel like part of our family and I will miss seeing them in the halls and having them in our home. Kelsey is very special to our family and we look forward to seeing all that her future holds! Congrats Kelsey!

Next week I'll be sharing the books that arrived in May and what I am excited to read this summer. I'll also give an update on the two reading challenges I'm in and what I have left to read to complete them. I can't wait to get back to reading and reviewing books. I've missed it, but when life is full, something has to drop to fit in what is important at the time. I also have a couple product reviews to share with you and they are both items you might want to have this summer!

As always, thanks for waiting for me to bring you more books and letting me share a bit about our life here.

What is Saving My Life Right Now

Today is the halfway point of winter. If you live where it is sunny and warm....then you likely aren't struggling through the days like the rest of us hoping for a peek at the sun and maybe a day with temperatures above 30 degrees.

Here in Iowa, the last few weeks have been foggy, dreary, rainy, and snowy. Pretty much miserable. We did have a nearly 50-degree day once, but it was so foggy that you couldn't really enjoy it. Plus we hardly have any snow where we live, so everything is muddy and dismal...not the pretty winter scene that you imagine. I've also been sick twice in the last week, once with the stomach flu and now a cold with the addition of a middle-of-the-night migraine. So, to say I'm ready for winter to be over is an understatement.

Modern Mrs. Darcy asked bloggers to brighten your day today, by sharing "What is Saving My Life Right Now". A list of things that are getting us through these short (but feel long), cold winter days.

What's Saving My Life Right Now

Books - This is an obvious one. But, what is especially helpful is that I have multiple books going at once. That way I have a book to fit every mood. Do I just want to read a couple chapters? Do I want to immerse myself in a story? Do I want to learn something? I've got a book for every mood as well as every reading location including physical books, eBooks, and audiobooks.

My InkWell Press Planner - cLife right now is hectic. I'm gone several nights a week for basketball games, On the weekends we are attending show choir competitions. I've been subbing a lot. And I have numerous to-do lists going through my head every single day. Prom is just a little over two months away and I have so much to get ready. My planner is keeping it all together for me and making sure I don't forget anything.

This Blanket - is amazing. I could sit in the chair under this blanket all. day. long. One side is a soft velour and the other is a warm fleece. It's the best of both worlds in one blanket.

My Devotional - My friend gave this to me for Christmas and it is crazy how each day seems to apply to my life or someone close to me. The insight is calming and just what I need to hear.

Bark Thins -  A friend of mine told me about these dark chocolate goodies. I had seen them before but wasn't sure I would like them. I tried this Dark Chocolate Toasted Coconut with Almonds and was hooked. It's like eating an Almond Joy. I keep them in the van when I need a snack.

Watching Our Kids Perform - We are heavy into the show choir season in our house. Every weekend is booked traveling to a school to perform and then waiting to see if we made finals. If you don't have show choir where you live, then you probably don't get how awesome it is to watch these kids perform. It's one of our favorite things to watch the kids do and I just love this year's show. Even though it makes for crazy schedules and late nights, it is all worth it.

My Husband - I am so thankful that I am in a marriage that is 50/50. If I am subbing or volunteering or finishing a deadline, I know that I can count on him to make dinner, get the kids from school, do laundry, or stop at the store without question or complaint. He has always been hands on and doesn't look at roles defined by gender roles. So, when I am a little swamped, I know he has my back and things will still get done around here. Especially with me being sick lately, he has gone above and beyond to help out.

This is what is saving my life right now. Things can get pretty hectic around here, but as long as we have each other's backs and have fun, we will make it through.

What is saving your life right now? Feel free to share it in the comments!

9 Years of Blogging - Some of My Favorite Posts

I can't believe I have been blogging for NINE YEARS. It's like having a child...watching it grow over the years. There have been lots of changes and boy, can I see lots of growth in my writing over the years.

My blog didn't start out as a book blog, but one where I would share snippets from our life, a quote or tip here and there, and maybe a few products or books I liked.

I found I really liked sharing about books and the readers did too, so I did a lot more book blogging. That has taken me so far in the last nine years that I never would have imagined. I get PAID to read and review books. I have had conversations and been praised by best-selling authors. I have met some amazing authors and book bloggers that never would have crossed my path before this blog. Plus, I have been exposed to some awesome books over the course of these nine years that I never would have even thought about reading.

I truly am Living the Dream and I'm so thankful to all of you who read and share my blog posts and reviews. I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite posts over the last nine years. Enjoy!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My very first book review I ever wrote on my blog: THE GROSSE ADVENTURES . At this time I was giving Storytime at our library and our librarian asked me to look over this book as she was considering getting the set for our library. I agreed and then decided to share my thoughts on the blog.

Three days later I shared my review of a book we read for the book club I was in at the time, DOWN RIVER by John Hart. I had already been using Goodreads.com pretty regularly by this point so it was natural for me to write my thoughts on a book. Once I placed these first two reviews on my blog back in August 2008, the rest is history. I remember shortly after these reviews, I started receiving requests in my email inbox and books began arriving in my mailbox. I began placing book reviews on my blog pretty consistently after this. Boy, have my review styles changed since 2008.

source

In September 2008, I attended an author reading and met, William Kent Krueger. I have since met him again and interviewed him. One of the many authors that I absolutely adore. He made me realize that authors are just everyday people and that I could certainly spark a conversation with them.I feel blessed to be able to interview authors and share snippets from their lives with you.

According to my label statistics, I've written 473 book reviews on my blog! That's a lot of books! I have even begun regularly reviewing children's books. I didn't even remember that my very first review on the blog was a children's book until I was writing this post. I'm glad I am making children's books a priority on the blog. It's where the love of reading begins!

I also had the privilege of offering product reviews on my blog as well. That has been fun as I've had the opportunity to try products I normally wouldn't, but things that our family has benefited from. I haven't been lucky enough to offer a product review of a car or trip, but maybe someday! Some of my favorite product reviews include:

Hask Hair Products
Rug
The Beast.

I've also shared a lot about my family on the blog. When I turned 40, I shared photos of our lives every week. I attempted to try that again by sharing Sunday Snippets for a time. But, frankly, life is so busy and it has been hard to share on a regular basis, plus now that I have teenagers, they are more resistant to me sharing about them on this space. But, I am so glad I did, because it has been fun looking back on some of those posts as they pop up when I am looking through previous posts. Some of my favorites about our family include:

Halloween Memories
What We Want You to Know
A Full Weekend
My Mom's Dream Memorial
Dandelions are Useful?
Scenes from Our Week: Week 22

I also love quotes and forms of inspiration and sharing those with you. For awhile I ran quotes and inspirations on Mondays, but I've since just posted them when I feel the nudge. Some of my favorite quotes I shared on here include:

Winter is Dead
Spread Happiness
Life is Hard
Slowing Down
Unplug

I'm so grateful to all of you who stop by and see what I'm sharing in this space. I appreciate the comments and emails you send to let me know that you are out there. I'm looking forward to a new year full of great books, inspirational moments, and memories that last a lifetime.

My Whole 30 Experience in November 2016

On a totally spontaneous whim, I decided to try WHOLE30 during the month of November. My cousin was going to do it and I decided to join in to support her and also kick start my own plateau. We were going to be together for a weekend in November to celebrate a family Christmas and I figured we could support each other by avoiding all the sugary deliciousness that goes along with a family gathering. Even though we live 8 hours apart, we've been able to support each other through the whole process.

When I started WHOLE30 on November 1st, I wasn't prepared. I hadn't shopped and filled my fridge with fruits and veggies and planned out my meals. So, honestly, the first few days were quite rough for me. I was drinking coffee without cream, having major sugar withdrawals, and STARVING. But, once I had time to go to the store, and plan out some meals, I did much better. But, I will say that the sugar withdrawal headaches lasted about a week. Pretty scary, huh?!? In fact, I had finally gotten through the sugar withdrawals when I had to work the election on November 8. It was a 16 hour day and I couldn't leave the center at all. So, I had to take plenty of food to get me through the day and guess what showed up....

...and they smelled Ah-Mazing! But, I didn't have a single bite and let me tell you. That was BRUTAL!

If you haven't heard of WHOLE30 you can check out the website HERE. But basically for those that may have food/dietary issues, WHOLE30 is a way to cleanse your body and see how you feel without some of the typical gut-disturbing foods in your system. WHOLE30 is also focused on changing your habits. That was the reason why I committed to it.  It was always so easy to grab something sugary to fill my stomach that I was falling down a horrible whole of sugar cravings and crashes. I knew I needed an intervention and WHOLE30 was just what I needed.

I have never done ANYTHING like this before. WHOLE30 asks that you remove dairy, legumes, grains, sugars, and alcohol from your diet for 30 days. Then reintroduce them at a schedule the book explains to watch for triggers or issues related to your health. The only thing remotely close to this that I have ever done is cut out diet soda from my diet for Lent. That worked really well for me and ever since then, I haven't been able to drink diet soda or anything with aspartame or sucralose without getting extremely sick to my stomach.

So, back to my WHOLE30 experience. I was all in. I stuck to the plan making my own mayo, searching for a dressing that didn't have sugar (so difficult). By the way, this was the only one that I found, Bolthouse Farms Classic Balsamic.  During our family Christmas, my cousin and I ate our own specially prepared food avoiding all the delicious sweets and food that appeared healthy but was prepared with butter or soy sauce or other forbidden foods.  I prepared separate meals for myself than I did for my family. I noticed the triggers I had for snacking and when I needed a snack I chose a handful of almonds or fruit or veggies or just didn't have anything at all. Not once did I have my usual go-to of cookies or candy. I kept baggies of grapes or clementines or apples on hand at all times to battle through late morning/afternoon hungry stages and traveling in the van.

The negatives:
Eating out was tough. It was hard to know exactly how food was prepared...with butter? With soy? So, I just didn't stress about it. I chose dishes that looked the least detrimental to my WHOLE30 plan and ate what I could. My usual choices were fish or grilled chicken. I still enjoyed the experience of dining out without the pile-on of calories. I also struggled a bit on Thanksgiving. We always eat at Cracker Barrel for our noon meal. I just decided I was going to enjoy the meal that I was paying for. I ate the turkey and ham even though the turkey had gravy on it. I had a couple bites of stuffing. I ate the sweet potato casserole that probably had butter and brown sugar in it. I chose baby carrots as a side even though I pretty sure they were smothered in butter. And, yes, I had the pumpkin pie. I didn't have the corn bread (which I love) and I only drank water and black coffee. I did have a few bites of other goodies later, on that day, but for the most part, I stuck to the plan.

What did I miss most during this time? Cheese, sugar, and sadly...alcohol. I missed having a glass of wine in the evening once in awhile. I stared longingly at cheese in the fridge. And, yes, like any normal human...I missed sweets. I made brownies and cookies several times over the month and I never once licked the spoon or snuck a bite of cookie dough. THAT WAS BRUTAL!

But, the great part is, I survived it. I did it (mostly). I completed the challenge and feel better because of it. I am not the same person I was on November 1st. I am 11 pounds lighter. I think differently about what I put in my stomach. I think about the worth of that food. Is this 10-second sugar pleasure worth it or can I eat a handful of grapes instead? I've noticed that dairy and grains make me feel bloated and foggy. So, I'll definitely be thinking twice before having them. I haven't really had too much sugar yet to notice any effects.

The only thing I didn't add into this WHOLE30 challenge was working out. Did I exercise? Yes, a few times, but definitely not regularly and didn't push myself at all. I felt I could only focus my energy on one thing and that was my eating. So, now I am hoping to add in the exercise component. Will I continue with WHOLE30 into December? Not really. I'll think more carefully about my food choices. When I can, I'll eat fruit, veggies and meat and avoid the others...especially when I am home alone and fixing meals for myself. But, the rest of the time, I want to eat with my family and share the experience of cooking a meal for them that may have pasta or grains or dairy and not worry about it. During this Christmas season, if I want a cookie or a Starbucks White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha....I'll order one. But then make sure I eat better the rest of the day. It's all about moderation and making better choices and WHOLE30 has helped me become more aware of that. I also like the idea of 3 bites. If you want something like ice cream, or a dessert...just taking 3 bites is enough to give you the enjoyment of eating something sweet but not overwhelming you with sugar. In fact, I did this just the other day. I shared creme brulee and had 3 bites. It was so hard not to snarf down the whole thing because it was so good, but the 3 bites were enough to give me the enjoyment of having a delicious dessert without stuffing me and making me miserable.

Would I do WHOLE30 again?
Sure....just not during a holiday month! LOL! But, I think anytime we can take a step back and look at our health and make some changes it is a good idea.

What saved me during the WHOLE30?
LaCroix. When I felt like I needed something special to drink besides water or lemon water, I grabbed a LaCroix.

Larabars. Not all of them are WHOLE30 compliant, but a great number of them are. These were great for when I was subbing or traveling. My favorites were the Lemon Bar, Blueberry Muffin, Pumpkin Pie and Cherry Pie. Anything with peanuts or chocolate are not allowed on WHOLE30. My local Hy-Vee sells the Larabars individually so you don't have to commit to a whole box which is nice.

Hardboiled eggs. I kept them in the fridge at all times. They were an easy/quick snack.

Good Foods Guacamole. I found this at both Hy-Vee and Target. No sugar or other forbidden ingredients and was great to add on top of eggs for flavor or to dip carrots and celery into. There is even one that has pineapple in it that was quite good.

If you choose to start WHOLE30, I highly recommend these two books. IT STARTS WITH FOOD is best for understanding the philosophy of WHOLE30 and what to expect while you are on it. The THE WHOLE 30 gives you a much simpler overview and is full of awesome recipes. THE WHOLE 30 COOKBOOK comes out tomorrow and even more recipes to help you through the 30 days.

My favorite recipes while on WHOLE30 included:

This homemade mayo - Make it exactly like it says.

Whole 30 Chicken Chowder

Chicken Chowder from THE WHOLE 30

Tuna Boats (adapted onto greens rather than on endive) from THE WHOLE 30

I also adapted a PF Chang Lettuce Wrap to be Whole 30 compliant.

I would love to hear about your Whole 30 experiences and if you have any great recipes or tips.  I have created a Pinterest Board with any awesome ideas and finds related to Whole 30 that you are welcome to follow, HERE.  Just be aware that just because it "says" it is Whole 30 Compliant, it isn't necessarily. Read the ingredients list yourself to be sure.

This Whole 30 experience is all my own. I highly recommend you consult your physician before taking on an extreme plan that cuts out certain nutrients from your diet, especially if you are diabetic. An Aha! Moment for My Reading Life

After my post a few weeks ago where I was being real about my reading life (see HERE), I received emails from some of you offering support and nods of agreement. I even received some advice about how to plan out time to read and make it a priority which I really appreciated.

Then yesterday while driving, I was listening to a podcast, What Should I Read Next, and heard a quote that I have since been playing over and over in my head....

I schedule my reading time, but not the books I read.

This was part of a conversation that Anne Bogel was having with her guest, Sarah Mackenzie. Check out their chat, HERE.

I found this to be such an "Aha! Moment". I think that is where I am struggling. I feel bound by deadlines and schedules and it no longer makes reading fun, which is exactly what Sarah Mackenzie talked about. Reading should be fun and not feel like homework. Yes, it is kind of like a job for me and I will have some books that I must schedule out for my paid gig. But, I really want to release the pressure of other people dictating what I am going to read next. I just want to read what feels right at the moment. I know publishers and marketing agents want you to post reviews when a book comes out. But isn't it great to have some reviews sprinkled out? It's kind of spreads the love out over the course of a few months rather than a bunch of reviews all at once, right?

I frankly have hardly read at all since I finished two really great books, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS and SMALL GREAT THINGS. After reading a great book, I have good book let-down and worry the next one won't match up. Nothing sounds good to me and when I try one and don't get sucked in by the first chapter I give up.

But, I've also been swamped in my regular life. Being a mom, a substitute teacher, a post-prom chair, volunteer, and wife doesn't leave much free time for reading.

On November 1, I started Whole30. This also takes a lot of my time planning out meals and preparing them. But, this was important to me for my health and well-being and I've made it a priority this month. Day 18 today and I'm feeling awesome!

So, I'll be thinking over this "Aha! Moment" from yesterday and the advice I received from some people I admire. I'll be posting a lot less from here til the end of the year. Basketball season begins next week with two nights a week spent at the basketball court, plus usually at least one concert a week during this holiday season. Throw in some shopping, decorating, and spending time with family in there as well and I'm about maxed out. I'm just not going to stress myself out and only do what I feel I can get done.

I have a couple year-end posts planned and will have some great children's books to share with you over the next few weeks. Otherwise, we'll see what I get around to related to book reviews.

Thanks for understanding and hanging around here. I appreciate you and hope your Thanksgiving reminds you of everything you have to be grateful for. I'm grateful for you!

My Reading Life - Being Real

I have been blogging for nearly nine years now. I didn't intend for my blog to focus mostly on reading, but that is how it has turned out. I'm glad that is the direction it has gone because it has lead me to meet people that I would have never met otherwise. It has directed me to books I never would have read. It has lead me to a part-time job writing for The Gazette that I never thought I would be able to do. But, quite honestly, it has stressed me out more than a few times.

I love reading. I love the excitement of starting a new book or the panic that I am almost at the end of the book and I don't want it to end. I relish in the thrill of a great a climax to the story, especially one I didn't see coming. I love that a book can take me anywhere in the world and to any time-period. I love that I can learn something new just by reading a book.

But, honestly, I get frustrated with my reading life. So many people ask me, how do you find time to read? Well, the truth is, sometimes I don't. I didn't read a single page from any book a couple weeks ago. Sometimes it is much easier to play a game on my phone or to flip through a magazine than to read the book sitting in front of me.

I am wondering if I am in the phase right now of "burn-out". I dislike that term. It was used a lot in my years working as a social worker. It was common for social workers to experience "burn-out" and take some much needed time off or to even leave the social work world. I experienced it myself after working with the homeless. I needed a change and found it in Hospice. Do I need a change now? No, not necessarily. But, I am feeling "burn-out" when I think about reading and writing a review.

I have been feeling extremely overwhelmed with the pile of books waiting to be read on my shelves and on my Kindle. Many are ones I purchased and want to read. Many others are ones that were sent to me with the hopes of having a fabulous review posted soon after the book was sent. Yet, others were gifts or loans, given to me by friends and family knowing that I would love this book and to please read it.

I have been trying to accept fewer books for review, but every time I say no....I feel guilty. I feel bad that I am turning down a book that I am sure I would like, but just can't commit to reading and reviewing right now.

I feel anxious opening my emails knowing I have several requests for books as well as check-ins from authors and publishers wondering how I am enjoying a book they sent...when I haven't even cracked the cover.

I'm in a reading slump right now. Life is crazy busy....I'm not excited about reading....which in turn makes me not want to read and I find other things to do instead.

But, a dear friend has moved back home which means our book club of 3 can start back up again. I will be reading for a fun reason. I've been thinking about my blog coming into 2017. Do I still want to blog and write reviews? Yes, so then I need to keep reading. Do I want to do things differently on the blog? Maybe. I have some ideas for new features, but can I be realistic about staying consistent? I've been running children's book reviews pretty consistently on Fridays and I am excited about this new piece to my reviewing. I'm planning to continue to review the children's books and have plenty to take me into the new year already. But, is there more I should/could be doing to promote books, authors, and reading in general? Maybe. I'm still thinking about it.

If you have ideas of what I could do here on the blog, in my reading life, or a new feature you would like to see, I would love to hear your thoughts. Reading isn't always easy, even if it looks like it is. But, I still love reading and always will. I guess maybe I just wish some days it was more fun and like with anything else....I wish I had more time.

Children's Book Review: When I Grow Up I Want to Be...a Good Person By Wigu Publishing

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE...A GOOD PERSON

Publisher: Wigu Publishing

Published: December 22, 2015

Fiction with a Lesson

"Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." Desmond Tutu

I immediately knew I was going to love this book based on the page of quotes on the first page of the book. They are all quotes that I love and have written down in various spots to reflect on often.

Brendan and Blake find out they are going with their parents to a funeral for a man from their town. Neither of the boys wants to go, but they parents insist they must go because it is the right thing to do. Mr. Becket was a kind and generous man that lived eighty-eight years helping others and being a good person. At the funeral, the boys learn about the kind of person Mr. Becket was and the legacy his kindness has left on others.

This book instills for kids the importance of making a difference in the lives of others.  It isn't talking about donating hundreds of dollars or asking you take on a certain career, but showing that no matter where you live, how much money you have, or the type of job you do, you can be a good person. Through Mr. Becket's life, we see the examples of how one person's kindness, compassion, and giving spirit can spread throughout a whole community.  This is something we have tried to teach our children by living in a small town and giving of our time and talents at various functions. We don't just live in this community, we are part of this community. Mr. Becket led that kind of life and his legacy will live on in the lives of those he touched.

I've been a fan of Wigu Publishing books for awhile. Their series WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE.... is a great way to introduce different career options to your child through fictional stories based on facts. To see my other reviews from Wigu Publishing books, click HERE.

Life is Not a Race...

Many of you know that I'm a mom with three active kids. I'm also a devoted wife who likes to take spontaneous lunch dates with her husband. I am also a substitute teacher that recently has been more full-time than part-time. I'm a community volunteer who just finished a huge campaign to purchase new band uniforms for our school. Finally, I'm supposed to be reading books and writing book reviews to share with my audience.

Well, lately, it has been a bit hard to keep up with all of these items as well as the many other hats I've been wearing lately. I'm exhausted, anxious, and overwhelmed over my never-ending list of tasks that don't seem to get done.

This weekend I'm making a 7-hour drive to meet my new great-niece and celebrate her sister's 2nd birthday. Then I'll be traveling again for Thanksgiving. The next week, I will again be traveling to visit my dear friend and another niece in Colorado. Amongst all this, I'll be shopping and preparing our family for the Christmas season. Then we will be taking a quick family trip after Christmas. So, needless to say, I have a lot of my plate.

But, I am so thankful to be able to have a full plate. I'm blessed to have family to visit and the time to do so. I'm blessed to have a husband that picks up the slack when I'm overwhelmed. I'm thrilled to be able to get away and spend time with those I care about.

So, I'll be slowing down my posts from now through the end of 2015. I'll be finishing up my commitments and posting a few extras, but for the most part, my family will be my focus during this precious holiday season.

Thank you for supporting me and hanging around, both when I am active and when I am not.

Dr.Wayne Dyer couldn't have said it better when he said,

Life is not a race; it is a journey,
something to be enjoyed each day.

I'm enjoying the journey each and every day and I hope that you relish in the moments this holiday season, absorbing the joy of a child, the laughter of a friend, and the hug of a loved one.

Catching You Up on Life Around Here

Even though I haven't been posting much on here, I have been keeping busy.

I finished this book last week:

I haven't told you about it yet, because I read it for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. The author is an Iowan, near where I grew up.  So, I am doing a feature on her and this book she wrote about her mom.  If you like Memoirs and WWII, this is a book for you! I'll be running my review in mid March after the Gazette runs my feature. I can assure you it is worth the read.  Pick up your copy, HERE.

I'm reading every chance I get.  Right now, on my Kindle I'm reading, The Settling Earth.
It's a collection of short stories and it's holding my interest.  It's a quick read and I hope to tell you about it next week.

I'm also reading Splinters of Light.
It comes out next week and I will have a review for you then as well.

Our boys are in the middle of show choir season, which means our weekends are full.  But, basketball is done, so we get our weeknights back...for a bit.  Until soccer begins.

I'm sick of this cold weather and as I type this, more snow is headed our way.  I know that technically, Spring is just a few weeks away, but it doesn't feel like it is going to get here anytime soon.

Blogging and sharing books I love with all of you brings me such joy. Especially when you share about a book I have told you about and how much you loved it.  That is why I started sharing my love of books with all of you.  But, as I have always said, this is my hobby and many other things come first in my life. So, if I am MIA for a few days or a week.  You'll know that I am just focusing of the other things in life.  But, know that I'll be back, just as soon as I can.

I am also spending time studying God's Word.  That has been my Lent goal and so far I have been sticking with it....7 days in. The truths have been eye-opening and I have been reading and rereading
several scriptures. I'm reading the SHE READS TRUTH "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" plan and really like how everything is laid out for me.  I didn't realize how much I missed studying His Word. I used to attend a weekly Bible Study called Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and have missed that daily connection.

These are some of the truths that have spoken to me in these first 7 days.  I'm sharing in case you need some encouragement or hope. If so, it can be found here.

Romans 3:20 For no one will be justified in His sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

Joel 2:13 For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, and He relents from sending disaster.

2 Corinthians 5 - Really the whole chapter brought tears to my eyes. I don't know why it was so powerful to me at this time, but it has been one I have read every single day.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Mark 2:17 "Those who are well don't need a doctor, but the sick do need one. I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Hebrews 12:5-6, 11 My son, do not take the Lord's discipline lightly or faint when you are reproved by Him, for the Lord disciplines the one He loves and punishes every son He receives. No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the fruit of peace and righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Too Many Things

Where have I been?

I've been subbing.

I've been busy in our community.

I've been a mom to three active kids.

So....the blog had to take a back seat.

I'm behind on book reviews.
I have already missed two deadlines and am close to missing a third.

I'm extremely behind on reading.

I've had a few days off from subbing, but my time
has been spent playing catch up here at home.

Mail needs to be sorted, bills paid, and mounds of laundry needed to be washed.

I am getting a better handle on things and am even reading a bit.

I have some great books that I will be reviewing soon for you.
But, see....that takes time too. I can't just whip a review out.
I like to think about it and be careful with my words.

So, as you can see...I'm still here....just focusing on more important matters.
Three great kids and a patient, loving husband that need me more.

I'll be back soon.
Thanks for waiting and understanding.

Sunday Snippets 10.5.14

On Sundays, I like to share snippets from our life here in small town Iowa.
It's been a few weeks since I have posted Sunday Snippets.
Sadly, that's how busy it has been around here.

I'm taking a moment to slow down
and reflect on these snippets from our life these last few weeks.
Take some time out of your day to relive the joy in your life.

Football finally started for Bennett.
We have had some gorgeous nights for football games.
I love cheering on #80 and his teammates.

Patrick is still running.
This week he broke the 20 minute mark, finishing in 19:57.
He just keeps improving and I'm super proud!

Reagan and I got a little wet at one of the meets, but we were still smiling!

I love this picture.
As I was trying to get a photo of Patrick while he came in for the finish,
I also got Pat and Reagan's arms cheering him on.
You can see Patrick right under Reagan's hand.
I love the spirit at Cross Country meets.
Everyone is cheering for everyone.
There is no complaining.
No yelling at the refs.
No negative attitudes.
Everyone is happy.

Just like Bennett and I were happy!

We attended our first marching band competition.
I really love watching all the bands.
I love the themes, the songs, the routines.
I'm proud to be a Band Mom!

Reagan took this shadow picture at one of the Cross Country meets
and I thought it was funny.
Pat and the kids look like a 3-Headed Blob.

This may have been Stormy's last nap on the porch this season.
The weather has taken a sharp turn for the cooler fall weather
and I doubt there are many porch days left.

We had a crazy weekend (still are)
and I haven't even gotten all the photos off of my camera yet.
I will have more to share with you next Sunday.

Be sure to take some time to relish in the joyous moments from your week.
Thanks for sharing in mine!
