This time, the Christmas Cats have to handle a problem involving the deer in a local park. The deer in Scott County Park are harming the trees by eating all the bark. So, the hunters have come out to take care of the problem in the park. The Christmas Cats are summoned to save the deer from the hunter and find them a new, safe place to live.

Many of us adults can relate to the problems deer can cause in our yards and gardens. This story shows the other side of deer desperately trying to find a place to live and eat during the long winter months. Through rhyme and humor, the Christmas Cats are able to find the perfect place for the deer to live that will keep everyone happy. The illustrations are vivid and show the personalities of the cats and the deer. The deers' faces show fear, disappointment, and happiness without even reading the words on the pages. This story shares the lessons of helping others and the determination to find the best solution. Lower-elementary-aged children will enjoy these tales of the Christmas Cats.

Constance Wilson graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in English and Journalism, but she began writing for her hometown newspaper in Independence, Iowa, at the age of ten. Connie holds a Masters in English, Journalism, and Education. Her career path led to teaching 7th and 8th-grade language arts and teaching writing at colleges and universities. She lives in East Moline, Illinois with her husband, Craig and with her son's family in Chicago. Last year I reviewed the second installment of the Christmas Cats series, THE CHRISTMAS CATS CHASE CHRISTMAS RATS. You can see that review, HERE. In the first book in the series, THE CHRISTMAS CATS WEAR SILLY HATS, children learn it is best to get along with others. In the second book, children learn to withhold judgement of others and keep an open mind. In fact, THE CHRISTMAS CATS CHASE CHRISTMAS RATS  was just named one of the 7 Best Books of 2014 published by CWA (Chicago Writers' Association) for its category out of 75 entries.  

Wilson continues the theme of teaching a lesson with rhyming prose in her third book in the series, THE CHRISTMAS CATS ENCOUNTER BATS. Wilson has written these books with the help of her young granddaughters. Each of her stories model kindness and good behavior. They teach children the importance of helping others through the telling of a silly story. This time the Christmas Cats are called to the mall to investigate a funny sound. When they find the sound is coming from a group of bats, everyone at the mall is scared and wants them taken care of. The Christmas Cats teach them all a lesson that each one of us is a part of God's creation and we all have a purpose here on Earth. The end of the book also includes a couple activity pages. This book is targeted towards the preschool - lower elementary age group. This series of books would make a great addition to your Christmas library of books.

The Christmas Cats are at it again is Book #2 of the Christmas Cat series.  In the first book, THE CHRISTMAS CATS IN SILLY HATS, children learn that it is best to get along with others in life.  In Book #2, the Christmas Cats are teaching us another lesson.  Through rhyming prose and silliness, we learn to keep an open mind and reserve our judgement of others.

The Christmas Cats in Silly Hats are sent to chase some squeaky clean rats who live in a laboratory.  These rats have a very important job and decide to run loose one day.  The Christmas Cats who assume rats are not fun, find out that the rats have important jobs and can be silly too.  The story reminds us to keep an open mind about others and by getting to know someone we may just find something we didn't know about them.

Even though the wording is simple, I think this book can work for both preschoolers as well as elementary age children.  The illustrations are fun and will get the kids laughing over the antics of the rats and cats in their silly hats.  For the older children, it can encourage a discussion about being kind and considerate to everyone.  This book is available both as an eBook and in print.

I love featuring writers from Iowa and was thrilled to find out Constance lived just 45 minutes from me growing up.  I am happy to support her writing career by spreading the word about her newest book.
