Don't Let a Typo Stop You from Love - Grammarly

Eighteen years ago, I was chatting with this man I had never met on AOL Instant Message. We lived in the same city and had started chatting through AIM one afternoon. Keep in mind this is something I had never done before, but something led me to say "Hello" back. We are closing in on 17 years of marriage and I have never regretted saying "Hello".  This was way before online dating was popular. In fact, I usually lied when people asked how I met my now husband because it was embarrassing to say we met "online". Dating websites are extremely popular and many have found love through websites that match up your interests and personalities with someone else.

I thought this fun infographic from GRAMMARLY would be interesting to some of you this Valentine's Weekend. If you are looking to set up a dating profile, there are some good tips for how to answer questions and describe yourself below. I would have to agree with the finding that women were turned off by men who used incorrect spelling in their profiles. That would be a turn-off for me as well!

Grammarly reviewed 10,000 eHarmony male/female matches generated by eHarmony’s matching algorithm. Fifty percent of the matches advanced to two-way communication while the other 50 percent failed to advance. Each male and female in a match wrote long-form answers to questions on their dating profile. Halloween Literary Character Quiz

In celebration of Halloween, I'm sharing this fun Halloween quiz created by Grammarly. I'm sorry if the picture below creeps you out. It does me too! But, this is who I got after taking the quiz.

Since I am such a scaredy cat, I can honestly tell you that I haven't read a single one of the books mentioned in this quiz. Reading one of these would give me nightmares for weeks.

World Teachers' Day with Grammarly

The most important person in a child's life besides a parent/grandparent/guardian is a teacher. Teachers spend the majority of the day with your child. Teachers are introducing concepts to your child beyond reading and math, like social skills, time management, and hard work. Those skills are just as important as anything they will learn in a textbook.

Teachers may technically work in the classroom from 8-3:30, but they are showing up at school an hour before the day begins and staying hours later to make sure everything is ready for another day. Especially, in the secondary setting, teachers will often stay to attend sporting events and extra-curricular activities to support their students and get to know them on another level. Teachers will call parents at home in the evening, grade papers until their eyes no longer stay open, buy books and supplies from their own bank account...all because they love teaching and care about your kids.

Since I work as a substitute teacher, I see many teachers who go above and beyond their duties every single day. They are the teachers that kids respect and appreciate. They are the teachers who have a passion for teaching. They are the teachers who find a way to relate to the students and get kids excited about learning.

I think if each of us take a moment to think about that one teacher who made learning fun, who made time for us, and who truly cared about our lives, you will find that teacher left a great impression on you and your learning. I have several favorite teachers from my school years. As a parent, I have several teachers who I personally saw go above and beyond for our kids. I saw their passion. I witnessed their long hours and dedication to their school and community. Those are the teachers I'm truly thankful were part of our kids education.

Celebrating International Literacy Day with Grammarly

International Literacy Day was recognized this week. Literacy is a basic human need in my opinion. Being able to read, write and comprehend is crucial to nearly everything we do. Not knowing how to read will greatly diminish your quality of life in many ways. In our world, there are so many children who don't have access to reading materials and don't even have the chance to read. Their parents have likely never read, and sadly the cycle of non-readers is continuing at a rapid pace.

As a substitute teacher, I often times am helping students with assignments, teaching them concepts, and likely, encouraging them to read once they have down time in class. I'm one of "those teachers" who always asks, "Do you have a book with you?". When a student once challenged me with the statement, "I don't have to know how to read.", I felt called to challenge that student back with all the reasons why we all need to be able to read. Reading is as natural to me as watching TV might be to someone else. If I had the choice, I would always choose to read....always. Most of us take for granted that we have the privilege and  freedom to read whatever and whenever (mostly) we want. No one questions what we are reading or forces us to read certain books (well, expect your teachers). Being able to escape into a book is one of life's pleasures. But basic reading is necessary to daily living. Reading a text on your phone, reading the storm warning coming across the TV screen, reading the back of a box of pasta so you know how to cook it, reading the instructions to fixing your car, or reading a menu at a restaurant are all things we could read on a daily basis. I challenge you to go through a day without reading SOMETHING. I bet you can't do it. Words are everywhere.
