The amount of education and training needed, the fact that she is a petite woman with attitude and heart, and the intricacy of her operations likened to sewing a piece of olive onto a macaroni noodle are all amazing to me. Mark Oristano is a well-known sports journalist and decides to follow Dr. Kristine Guleserian, a noted pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon who works on tiny hearts of some of the youngest children as well as some of the most damaged and weakest hearts in children. Through her voice, as well as his, we are introduced to the years of grueling training that medical students go through to the day she decides to become a surgeon to the many lives she has saved during her years at Children's Medical Center in Dallas.

One of her patients, Rylynn, is featured throughout the story. Rylynn's case begins as an infant, born with a heart abnormality. As a toddler, she becomes Dr. Guleserian's patient and eventually needs a heart transplant. The story of resilience of this sweet girl and all that she endured to be a healthy child is quite amazing. She is a true fighter and reading about the multiple surgeries and near death experiences her and her parents endured brought me to tears.

At just 140 pages, this book is a quick look at the life and career of a compassionate doctor who truly loves being a surgeon. It isn't bogged down in medical jargon, but instead offers the human side of doctors, patients looking for another chance at life, and parents praying to see their children be active and grow into adults. A really fascinating book!

Mark Oristano

Mark Oristano has been a professional writer/journalist since the age of 16. After growing up in suburban New York, Oristano moved to Texas in 1970 to attend Texas Christian University.  A major in Mass Communications, Mark was hired by WFAA-TV in 1973 as a sports reporter, the start of a 30-year career covering the NFL and professional sports.


Mark has worked with notable broadcasters including Verne Lundquist, Oprah Winfrey and as a sportscaster for the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network and Houston Oilers Radio Network.  He has covered Super Bowls and other major sports events throughout his career.  He was part of Ron Chapman’s legendary morning show on KVIL-FM in Dallas for nearly 20 years.

In 2002 Oristano left broadcasting to pursue his creative interests, starting a portrait photography business and becoming involved in theater including summer productions with Shakespeare Dallas. He follows his daughter Stacey’s film career who has appeared in such shows as Friday Night Lights and Bunheads.

A veteran stage actor in Dallas, Mark Oristano was writer and performer for the acclaimed one-man show “And Crown Thy Good: A True Story of 9/11.” Oristano authored his first book, A Sportscaster’s Guide to Watching Football: Decoding America’s Favorite Game. A Sportcaster’s Guide offers inside tips about how to watch football, including stories from Oristano’s 30-year NFL career, a look at offense, defense and special teams, and cool things to say during the game to sound like a real fan.


In 2016 Oristano finished his second book, Surgeon’s Story, a true story about a surgeon that takes readers inside the operating room during open heart surgery. His second book is described as a story of dedication, talent, training, caring, resilience, guts and love.

In 1997, Mark began volunteering at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, working in the day surgery recovery room. It was at Children’s that Mark got to know Kristine Guleserian, MD, first to discuss baseball, and later, to learn about the physiology, biology, and mystery of the human heart. That friendship led to a joint book project, Surgeon’s Story, about Kristine’s life and career.

These books by Animal Planet are just phenomenal. The photography and snippets of information are just enough to keep children interested. Like the title suggest, these books offer bite-size facts to engage children and keep them interested in animals. Everyone loves any baby animals because they are always so adorable and the photographers photographed some really cute babies for this edition. Even baby opossums are quite adorable hanging from a tree. All kinds of animals are featured including those you would have in your home, in your local woods, or those animals far away in jungles. Some animals babies are born ready to walk and be mostly on their own, while others need their parents for months after their birth. All this is shared in brief "bites" alongside adorable photographs of babies and sometimes their parents. 

For children who love animals or like non-fiction books, this soft cover paperback with heavy paper would be a hit for lower elementary through middle-school-aged kids.

Another phenomenal Animal Planet book for kids who love to learn about animals. This book features animals and how they get around. By starting with where the various animals live, then how their particular body features help them get around quickly or slowly. Children will learn that foxes can run at 45 mph, the basilisk lizard runs on water and doesn't sink, baby elephants travel with their moms in herds, and grasshoppers can travel 3 feet in a single leap. 

Again, the photography throughout the book is amazing and the small "bites" of information and facts sprinkled on the pages is enough to engage and interest the child to keep reading. There is a lot to learn about the wide variety of animals in this book. It's perfect for lower elementary to middle-school students.

In honor of Mother Teresa's canonization on Sunday, it's the perfect time for me to tell you about one of her many ministries that were so important to her life.

Tony Cointreau spent a life living in wealth and privilege. He is a member of the Cointreau liqueur family and became a well-known international singer and performer. In 1979, Cointreau saw a magazine photo of one of Mother Teresa's volunteers carrying a dying man in his arms and he knew immediately that he had to be a part of that work. He believed that if he could offer comfort to at least one dying person, then his life would have a purpose. Cointreau did much more than offer comfort to one, but to many in his twelve years of volunteering. His book shares lessons he learned while comforting those who were considered the lowest of society. He volunteered his time at Gift of Love, an AIDS Hospice house in New York City. During the 1980's and 1990's, much was still unknown about the disease of AIDS. Many clinics and hospitals were unwilling to care for those dying from the disease. No one would be turned away at Gift of Love and were treated with the utmost respect and care as if they were the most important person in the house. These patients included drug users, formerly incarcerated men, homeless men, and those who had no family willing to support them.

Cointreau had no concept of the types of lives these men lead to bring them to live their final days at Gift of Love, but one thing he learned from Mother Teresa was no judgment. Everyone was loved, fed, and cared for with no questions asked. His chapters offer lessons he learned during his many years volunteering including the power of touch, listening, music, laughter, faith, and respect. His stories remind us that these men are no different from any of us and just want to leave this Earth in comfort and surrounded by love.

I'm a hugger and have always been comforted by someone's gift of a hug or gentle touch on the hand. This is usually my first way to offer comfort to someone.  The men staying at Gift of Love hadn't been touched by anyone due to their AIDS diagnosis. There was so much fear and misinformation about how the disease was transmitted at that time that people avoided them. When hugs or gentle touches were offered to these men, their pain and anxiety would disappear and they were calmer. I can't imagine being in my final days and suffering alone or without someone holding my hand.

Cointreau's stories of love, patience, friendship, and nonjudgment show that even in a society where we focus on the bad, there is still a lot of good going on in our world.

While growing up, I always felt that love was conditional. Was I perfect enough to please the grown-ups? Was every hair in place? Were my clothes spotless, my schoolwork beyond reproach? Did I say the right thing, that didn’t sound childish?

I could go on and on with my dilemma of needing to be perfect in order to feel worthy of being loved. It was an illusion that I had somehow been conditioned to believe in—a very physically and emotionally exhausting way to go through childhood and beyond. The irony is that I knew from the start how to love others, but did not feel secure in the fact that I could receive it as well. No doubt my aunt Tata and my maternal grandmother, Mémé, saw through my obsession with my own perfection but were powerless to change the patterns of daily life in my home which had created the monster. I do remember Tata trying to build up my confidence by telling me that there was nothing I could possibly do, including murder, that could change her love for me.

And Mémé always wrote to me from Boston on my birthday that I was the most wonderful little boy in the world. Those were momentary panaceas that, in the long run, were not enough to change my neurotic need to feel that I really was good enough to be loved unconditionally. For years I searched for that love and found it in bits and pieces by attaching myself to “other mothers”— women who cared for me as though I were their child. Lee Lehman was the first when I was thirteen. Then came Ethel Merman, when I was eighteen. Both relationships lasted a lifetime. But my final healing was from the little Albanian nun, Mother Teresa.

I had been immediately drawn to this tiny, bent-over woman and her legion of Missionaries of Charity Sisters when I first saw that magazine picture of a volunteer in the Home for the Dying in Calcutta carrying a man in his arms—a man he had undoubtedly never known before. This volunteer had been able to love the man without reservation simply because he was a human being in need of comfort and care in the last hours of his life.

That was the legacy Mother Teresa was giving to the world and I knew immediately that it contained something I had been seeking my whole life. I didn’t care what religion she practiced. I just knew that being around her would be a giant step in healing the child within me that had never felt perfect enough to deserve the love she offered. If I were given the chance to freely give that kind of love, I knew I would be able to receive it as well.

I believe it to be the most powerful force in the world.

Book Review: Guarded By Angela Correll AND A GIVEAWAY PACKAGE

Readers may remember I reviewed Correll's first book, GROUNDED in the fall of 2013. See it HERE. Correll writes from her Kentucky home surrounded by farm animals and gardens. She is passionate about farming and has her own farm-to-table restaurant as well as a shop that sells natural beauty products. These passions, as well as her faith, come through in the stories she writes. 

In GUARDED, Correll picks up on Annie's story from GROUNDED. Annie had been laid off by her job as a flight attendant and dumped by the man she expected to marry. So, rather than going back to the crazy life she led in New York City, she returned home to her grandmother's farm in Kentucky. Move forward a few months, and Annie is now trying to find a way to fix up the family stone house that was damaged in a fire. While fixing it up, she finds letters hidden in the floorboards. The letters hold a family secret that will take her to Italy and back in time to WWII to find out the answers. 

Since Annie’s return to Kentucky, she has been reunited with childhood friend, Jake. Their romance has been developing slowly and now that Annie feels like she is ready for a life with Jake, something from her past begins to put a wedge between them. With all these secrets, Annie isn't sure there is a future for her on the farm in Kentucky.

I appreciate how Correll has connected her two books while also allowing them to stand alone. Fans of her first book will enjoy reading about the same characters and new readers will enjoy her casual writing style that makes you feel like you are sitting at the table with Annie and her grandmother enjoying pie and coffee.  The conversations flow and when their faith is weaved into the story, it is natural and not overbearing. 

The historical piece in this novel was my favorite, especially the telling of the story through letters sent during the war. My mother's family also has a historical stone house and this story made me wonder about the secrets and memories that house also holds in its walls.  

Correll did a beautiful job telling a story from the war that is not readily talked about. Her descriptions of Italy, the food, and the people made me want to book a trip there. This part of our war history has been ignored and her twist to this piece of our history was handled delicately and with love. This easy weekend read is perfect for cuddling up with a cup of coffee and a fire….and don’t forget the pie.

I absolutely love books that teach children somcthing through the telling of a story. These were the kind of books I chose for our children when they were younger and the ones I go back to when giving gifts.

Pipsie is a sweet girl who, along with her pet turtle, Alfred, share lessons about nature. Pipsie and her turtle meet a new friend, Frannie the caterpillar, who suddenly disappears. They are determined to find out the mystery of what happened to Frannie. As Frannie and Alfred explore nature looking for clues about Frannie, children will learn about the wonders of nature.  Children will be excited to turn the pages and find out the mystery to Frannie's disappearance.

The illustrations fill the pages and are brightly colored. Pipsie, Alfred, and Frannie's personalities show not only in their conversations, but in the delightful creations on each page.

I have no doubt children will love following along with Pipsie and her detective excursions. This would be perfect for preschool-elementary aged children. I could also see teachers using this book in the classroom for a unit on insects.  I certainly hope that Pipsie continues to explore nature and share her stories with us.

Tracy Bishop won an art contest in kindergarten, and she’s been creating art ever since. A graduate of San Jose State University, she is also the illustrator of Not the Quitting Kind by Sarra J. Roth. She lives in San Jose, California, where she is inspired on a daily basis by her son, husband, and a hairy dog named Harry.
