ANIMAL BITES: BABY ANIMALS

These books by Animal Planet are just phenomenal. The photography and snippets of information are just enough to keep children interested. Like the title suggest, these books offer bite-size facts to engage children and keep them interested in animals. Everyone loves any baby animals because they are always so adorable and the photographers photographed some really cute babies for this edition. Even baby opossums are quite adorable hanging from a tree. All kinds of animals are featured including those you would have in your home, in your local woods, or those animals far away in jungles. Some animals babies are born ready to walk and be mostly on their own, while others need their parents for months after their birth. All this is shared in brief "bites" alongside adorable photographs of babies and sometimes their parents. 

For children who love animals or like non-fiction books, this soft cover paperback with heavy paper would be a hit for lower elementary through middle-school-aged kids.

Another phenomenal Animal Planet book for kids who love to learn about animals. This book features animals and how they get around. By starting with where the various animals live, then how their particular body features help them get around quickly or slowly. Children will learn that foxes can run at 45 mph, the basilisk lizard runs on water and doesn't sink, baby elephants travel with their moms in herds, and grasshoppers can travel 3 feet in a single leap. 

Again, the photography throughout the book is amazing and the small "bites" of information and facts sprinkled on the pages is enough to engage and interest the child to keep reading. There is a lot to learn about the wide variety of animals in this book. It's perfect for lower elementary to middle-school students.

Children's Book Review: Animal Planet Strange, Unusual, Gross, & Cool Animals By Charles Ghigna

Third graders were BEGGING me to read from this book last time I subbed in their classroom. This is a book every kid will be fascinated with.

Animal Planet has brought the strangest and most interesting animals to life in this book to show kids how vast the creatures of our planet really are. From Betic Midwife Toad to the Rhombic Egg Eater to the Christmas Frigatebird to the Hickory Horned Devil, I learned about all kinds of animals I never heard of nor do I want to ever see in person.

The photography, of course, is amazing and there is just enough information to teach kids about where they live and why they are either strange, unusual, gross or cool. With some creatures, it gives quite a bit of information and others, like the Jumping Spider below, just gives a little tidbit. Isn't this photo enough to give you the creeps?

The book is laid out in sections based on the title. When I subbed in third grade, I used reading from this book as a behavior incentive by giving them a few strange animals while waiting to go to lunch. The kids were fascinated and couldn't wait to have me read more. Later in the day after they had worked hard on their assignments, I chose a child to pick a category and then read a random creature from that section. It was a little bit of science and geography wrapped together talking about the creature and discussing where they lived. The kids loved seeing the photos most of all.

This is a great book for any child, but especially those who love science. I'm sure I could use this as an incentive in any elementary classroom. Our own high-school-aged kids even had fun looking through it.

Children's Book Review: Animal Atlas by Animal Planet

This comprehensive atlas covers each of the seven continents as well as the oceans and the animals and species that inhabit them. The book begins with introducing your child to the various biomes in each of the areas. A world map is featured next with animals placed in their homelands.

Each continent is singled out, first showing the type of land (biome) that makes up the continent. The pages follow with amazing photos, some filling the whole page, of all the animals featured. I guarantee there will be animals that you have never heard of before. The European Souslik reminds me of a prairie dog. Who knew there is a Dung Beetle that helps take care of all the dung across the African desert. The Plumed Basilisk can run across the water or slow down and swim. I was also surprised to learn that the Antarctic Midge is the only insect that is native to Antarctica and is a fly that can't....fly.

As you can see, these are just a few of the many fascinating things to learn in this book. Children will be enthralled by the photos of all the different animals and will enjoy the unique facts about each one. You can even encourage more learning with a Curriculum Guide. It includes a scavenger hunt to help you child find facts throughout the book among many other activities. To download a copy of the guide, click HERE.

The only drawback to the book is the size of it. It is quite a large and heavy book, measuring 11 1/2 by 13 inches. It wouldn't fit on most bookshelves unless turned on its side. Younger children would have to lay the book on the floor to look at the pages as it would be too heavy for them to hold. But, these bigger pages do make the photos pop and they are quite amazing. If your child has to do a report on an animal this coming school year, this book would make a great starting point for finding a unique animal to learn about.

After reviewing POLAR ANIMALS and OCEAN ANIMALS from Animal Planet in April, I was thrilled to check out their newest books. In fact, our family just visited an aquarium and some of the facts I read in the Ocean Animals book made that visit even more interesting for me. You can see my review, HERE.

I grew up on a farm and am a sucker for farm books. They are usually the ones I am drawn to when choosing books as gifts for new babies or my nieces and nephews. My family raised sheep, beef cattle, horses, and chickens while I was growing up and my sister lived on a hog farm, so I was around farm animals all the time. Even though I no longer live on a farm, I am still drawn to them and love baby farm animals, especially.

From ducks to goats, to dairy cows, to horses, to turkeys, to alpacas, no farm animal was left out. Each page offers vivid photos of farm animals in their environment. A globe and fact bubble show where the animals can live and their approximate size in relation to an item the child would recognize like a school desk, guitar, or sail boat. Various information is shared regarding what they eat, what they can do for farming, and about their babies. There are so many cute photos of mommas and their babies I could look at the pages over and over again.

There is an especially fun page that shows all the different breeds of chickens. My parents' neighbor raises chicken and has some of these featured on this page. The Buff Polish and the Silkie just make me laugh.

I even learned things about farm animals including baby ducks can swim immediately once hatched, but it takes them about eight weeks to learn to fly. Did you know goats, just like humans, have 32 teeth? This book is a wonderful resource to teach your children about farming or for farm kids to enjoy!

ANIMAL PLANET: WILD ANIMALS

Since June is National Zoo Month, it's the perfect time to share Animal Planet's newest book in the Animal Bites series, WILD ANIMALS.  Just like the other books featured in this series, it is full of our favorite zoo animals as well as some animals I've never even heard of. Each page is full of National Geographic quality pictures and facts that will interest kids and parents.

Each animal page features a globe showing where they live and factual information related to that animal. Since the book is a soft cover, it makes it lighter for kids to hold and easier to handle.

There is a whole page dedicated to the Regal Jumping Spider. I found this information interesting because we had just had an incident with a jumping spider biting a student on a trip last week. So, this page gave me a lot of interesting facts and before last week, I never even knew they existed.

Did you know that giraffes hum at night and that females have hair on their horns while males do not? Even though tigers are a member of the cat family, they actually like to swim and can scrunch up their face to swim under water. So many animals are talked about in this book, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

In celebration of Earth Day today, I wanted to share with you some great books from Animal Planet about some of the animals that inhabit our earth. Animal Planet immerses viewers into the lives of animals, through TV and online platforms. They are the go-to resource for kids to learn about their favorite animals.

I loved these kinds of books as a kid. I still love walking through zoos and learning about animals. There are so many fascinating characteristics to learn about each animal and Animal Planet does a great job of teaching these to children without overwhelming them.

In POLAR ANIMALS, I am immediately drawn to the penguins. I have always enjoyed watching them both at zoos and on TV. There are so many different species of penguins, including one I hadn't heard of before. Did you know there was a Macaroni Penguin? In this book, I expected to read about polar bears, moose, penguins, seals, and walruses. But I hadn't realized all the specific types of birds, squirrels, and hares that also live in the freezing cold areas of our world.

The photographs pop on each page and the facts next to the pictures are brief, keeping kids interested in learning more. Nothing is boring and the tidbits of information are unique and fun. I love learning why animals have certain features to help them live in their environment, like the arctic fox that has short legs to hold in body heat and furry paws to keep them from slipping on the ice. There are certainly many amazing creatures that live on our earth and it is our job to make sure they can continue to thrive in their environment.

Bring an aquarium right into your home or classroom with this book full of amazing photographs. Every time I visit an aquarium, I am in awe of the different colors and shapes that live in the oceans. I've never heard of a Surgeon Fish before, but the facts on the page teach me about its unique characteristics. Rather than just telling me it is nine inches long, it also tells me that it is about the size of a dinner plate...a great way to help a child understand its size.

I bet kids will be shocked to find out what is unique about the male seahorse. It can do something no other male species on earth can do!

There is also a page dedicated to keeping our oceans clean. During a clean up effort in 2015, over 1.7 million beverage containers were collected from shorelines around the world. I think kids will also find the photo of the discarded fishing nets removed from the ocean to be eye-opening. It is a great way to have a conversation with your child about keeping our earth clean and how we can contribute to that in our homes and community.

I can't say enough about how great these books are. I will be pulling these out in the classroom and when I am babysitting our friend's kids. These books will keep kids interested over and over again!
