My Bout of Books 21 Wrap Up

Bout of Books

I participated all last week in the Bout of Books 21 Reading Challenge. It's a low-pressure way to jump-start your reading and have fun with other readers at the same time.

There were twitter chats and daily challenges and LOTS of encouragement to keep reading. Since I can't shut off the rest of the world and my responsibilities, I still had to do other things this week. But, I really tried to focus my spare moments on reading. Here is how my week turned out.

These are the books I had decided to focus on during the Bout of Books 21 week. You can see the full list, HERE. They were all books I wanted to read so I thought that would help push me to keep reading.

Day 1 - January 8, 2018

The challenge today was to describe yourself #insixwords.

I had a hard time choosing just 6 words because I am so much more than these 6 words. But this is what I shared anyway.

There was also a Twitter Chat that evening that was a lot of fun.

Pages read: 96 from JUST BETWEEN US and THIS IS HOW IS ALWAYS IS
Minutes listened: 0

Day 2 - January 9, 2018

The challenge today was to post your reading goals.

My reading goal this year is 100 books. Last year I read 120 (including children's books) so this should be manageable. It is basically one regular book and one children's book a week if you figure it that way...with 2 weeks off. I will also be participating in the Modern Mrs. Darcy 2018 Reading Challenge.  I should have goals related to reading my own books from my own shelves, reading books from my Kindle and then deleting them, getting reviews done on time, etc. But, that is pretty much just setting myself up for failure. LOL!

Pages read: 15 - from THIS IS HOW IS ALWAYS IS...ugh....I was gone all day and then at a basketball game all evening
Minutes listened: 90 minutes - driving in the car throughout the day listening to FIRST WOMEN

Day 3 - January 10, 2018

The challenge today was to make a book rainbow. I chose to make two book rainbows.

The on of the left is from random to read books off my shelves. The other is from my collection of The Reader's Digest Best Loved Books for Young Reader's Collection.

Pages read: 120 page in JUST BETWEEN US
Minutes listened: 35 minutes on audio of FIRST WOMEN

Day 4 - January 11, 2018

The challenge today was all about favorites. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to participate today.

It was a busy day. I had a lunch date with my husband and our nephew and we had a little winter storm blow through and we celebrated our daughters 13th birthday. So, not as much reading as I would have liked.

Pages read: 10 pages in THIS IS HOW IT ALWAYS IS until I fell asleep
Minutes listened: 35 minutes on audio of FIRST WOMEN

Day 5 - January 12, 2018

The challenge today was a Newspaper Headline. I didn't have a chance to get something done for this one.

Pages read: Zero - too many things going on today and basketball in the evening. I was too tired when I went to bed.
Minutes listened: 2 hours on audio of  FIRST WOMEN- I had appointments and errands to run so I listened while driving.

Day 6 - January 13, 2018

The Challenge today was Book Spine Poetry.

I've never been very good at poetry, reading or writing it. But, I thought this left a lot to the imagination.

Fingerprints of you
Words get in the way
Promise not to tell

It gave me the image of an abused woman. Probably because I'm dealing with that subject in the book I'm reading, but the woman is thinking of fingerprints that he left behind...maybe on her neck. His words get in the way - his apologies his excuses - of her leaving him. He constantly is asking her to promise not to tell anyone.

There was also a twitter chat, but I wasn't able to participate.

Pages read: 179 pages read and finished JUST BETWEEN US.
Minutes listened: 30 minutes on audio of FIRST WOMEN while getting ready to head to more basketball.

Day 7 - January 14, 2018

Today's challenge was to write a book review for a book you finished this week.  I didn't have a chance to do that today as we were at my parent's house all day for a family gathering. I'll be posting two reviews this week.

Pages read: 32 pages in THIS IS HOW IT ALWAYS IS
Minutes listened: 30 minutes on audio of FIRST WOMEN while getting ready to head to my parent's house.

So, I didn't reach my goal of finishing 6 books and instead only finished one book, JUST BETWEEN US. But, I am very close to being finished with my audiobook and can focus on the others this week hopefully. I have some review books looming so we will have to see how the week plays out.

I just really appreciate these read-a-thons because it forces me to THINK about reading during any spare moment. It rekindles a love for reading. It gets me talking about books on social media. It introduces me to other readers, writers, bloggers, and book lovers out there as well. And, the best part is it always introduces me to new books I should read.

Thanks to the Bout of Books crew for hosting and if this sounds fun to you, be sure to check out Bout of Books 22 that begins on May 14. That is graduation week for our son, so I KNOW I won't be able to participate in that one. But, if you have a chance, I would highly recommend it.

My Bout of Books 21 Reading List

I'll be participating in the Bout of Books 21 Reading Challenge this week. I'm being overly optimistic as now my week is looking a little crazy. But, I'm still hoping to get a few of these finished. Since I've got physical books, an audio book, and a Kindle book, I have lots of options.

I'm still finishing up JUST BETWEEN US.
I've started listening to FIRST WOMEN on audio.
I just received THIS IS HOW IT IS on Kindle through my library Bridges account so I have 12 days left to get that read.
The boys loved READY PLAYER ONE and since the movie comes out soon, I want to read it too and see the movie with them.
THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE is one I just purchased and I really want to read.
OUR STORY BEGINS has been a review book that has been waiting for me and I've been anxious to read it.

#ThankfullyReading

I have much to be thankful for this week...my amazing family, friends that make me laugh and bless me every day, good health, a pantry filled with food, a warm home, and co-workers who have helped me beyond measure and kept me sane these last few weeks. I’m especially thankful for the break this week and looking forward to reading!

I’ll be sharing the joy of reading this week with the hashtag #thankfullyreading because I am truly thankful for time to finally read! Check out Instagram or Twitter for the hashtag and see all the great books everyone is reading.

What I am planning to read over these next 5 days:

I have about 35% left in this book. It's a WWII story based on true events and truly an amazing story. I gave the book to my cousin for her birthday and we've been reading it together, but she has already finished it.

I have homework just like my students do. We will be discussing this next week and so I have to read it for the first time just like they do. We will be comparing it to the tragedy of Oedipus Rex. Should be an interesting discussion on Monday.

I've read the first two in Correll's series and really enjoyed them. This is her newest and just came in the mail. I can't wait to get back in touch with the characters.

Thanks to Jennsbookshelves.com for the way to connect over books this week!

10 Books I'll Be Reading this Summer

I have been looking forward to summer reading for months! The school year was so hectic for me and I wasn't able to read near as much as I wanted or hoped to. So, this summer, I am hoping to kick my reading in gear and power through several books that I have been super anxious to read based on recommendations or ones that will meet my 2017 Reading Challenge categories.

These are the ten books I have decided that I absolutely want to read this summer because I know once the school year starts I will have less and less free time to devote to reading.

These aren't the ONLY books I am hoping to read as I have even more books waiting to be reviewed that are on my list. These are the ten books that I have been wanting to read for awhile and I think are perfect for summertime reading. These books fit all my happy reading places including historical fiction, mystery, memoir, chic lit, and a good old classic. I am starting one of these today and will be sure to share my thoughts on all of these over the course of the next months.

STARS OVER CLEAR LAKE is set in Iowa after WWII and it's first on my list as it's part of my work writing for The Gazette.

A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN meets my classic book for the reading challenge and is one I keep hearing about and would love.

SUGAR is written by an Iowa author, which meets a reading challenge category, and since I love her writing, I know I'll love it.

THE ZOOKEEPER'S WIFE has been on my shelf for too long. Now that the movie is out (and getting good reviews) I want to read the book first.

THE BOOKSHOP ON THE CORNER meets another reading challenge category and who doesn't love books about books!

THE BREAKDOWN is by an author who kept my heart pumping with her first book and will make for good summertime reading. This one isn't available until mid-July.

THE ROANOKE GIRLS was a book win from Random House and one I've been wanting to read.

IT'S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND is written by a former prosecutor turned author. I bet she has lots of stories to tell and I'm anxious to check out this new author's thriller!

LILAC GIRLS has been on my list for WAY TOO LONG. So many people are telling me to read it and the bonus is it fits one of my reading challenge categories.

THE GIFT OF AN ORDINARY DAY is one I heard about recently as a good read for a mom preparing to send a child off to college. The bonus is that when I went to look it up on GoodReads, I noticed I already had it on my shelf! So, this is a must-read for my summer!

I'd love to hear what you are reading this summer. Be sure to comment below and tell me your summer reading list!

Product Review and Promo Code: Brazilian Hammock Chair

Summers under the big shade tree in our backyard will be so much more enjoyable with our new Brazilian Hammock Chair. I can't tell you how excited our whole family is about this chair. I have a feeling we will all be fighting over it this summer.

This is an oversized hammock chair in green and blue stripes. It is quite durable and extremely comfortable. You can sit upright or spread out the fabric and lay flat in it while swinging in the breeze. We chose to hang ours from a tree in our backyard, but it could be hung on porches or decks as well. It's light so you could move it around and take it with you if you go camping, you just have to have the mechanisms to hang it. It does not come with the materials used to hang it, but they were easily found at our local home store. My husband had it hung up in less than half an hour.

This hammock will make the perfect reading spot for the summer. I can't wait to enjoy it...if I can ever get my daughter out of it!

If you'd like to get your own Brazilian Hammock Chair, use promo code HAMMIHL1 for 15% off at checkout by clicking HERE. If you have Amazon Prime, you can get free two-day shipping and have this item for just over $20.

Thanks so much to Breakthrough Premium Products for sending the product for the purpose of this review. This review is my honest opinion. If you choose to purchase this product through the above links, I may receive a small commission without you having to pay a cent more for your purchase. Thanks for supporting SincerelyStacie.com.

Reading Challenges for 2017

If you are looking for ways to read more books in 2017 or to change up your reading a bit, a reading challenge is often a good place to start. A reading challenge usually gives you 12 topics (maybe more) and challenges you to find a book that fits that category.

Since I am hoping to read more books as well as read more books off my own shelf in 2017, I am hoping these two challenges will motivate me.

The first challenge is one that our small town library is sponsoring. Our library board, of which I am a member, created this list of 12 categories for a reading challenge. We are hoping to entice our small community of readers to read more books and step out of their usual reading a bit and maybe even find a new author or new genre they really like. Maybe we could even learn something new. If you would like a copy of this Reading Challenge bookmark and to join me in this challenge, I'd be happy to send you a copy. Just email me at StacieLe AT netins DOT net.

I'll also be doing Modern Mrs. Darcy's Reading for Fun Reading Challenge. To receive her printable list, click HERE.

11. a book you were excited to buy or borrow but haven't read yet
12. a book about a topic or subject you already love

I have some ideas for some of the categories, but we will also see how the year falls. At least I know some of my must reads for 2017. I will update you as the year goes on to see which books I've read that fit either one of these lists. There may be some cross-over between the lists, but I'm hoping that this will add 24 new books to my "read" list.

Some books I'm planning to read for these challenges include: LILAC GIRLS, THE STORIED LIFE OF A.J. FIKRY, WOMEN HEROES OF WORLD WAR I and WORLD WAR II, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, READY PLAYER ONE, GROWING UP COUNTRY, THE YEAR OF LIVING DANISHLY, THE BOOKSHOP ON THE CORNER.  I think that is a good start and I'm anxious to see what other books come my way that fit these categories.

What do you do to read more books? How do you choose what to read next? Let me know if you are joining a reading challenge for 2017.

My Favorite Books of 2016

I read 92 total books last year. That number blows me away. But, I also know that over half of them were children's books. Still, taking the time to read children's and YA books and reviewing them adds a lot to my schedule as well.

I read 48 Children's Books ranging from children's to YA. There were non-fiction and fiction books, books on animals and sports, funny and inspirational books, and numerous life lesson stories. I really loved all the children's books I read. Thanks to Booking Mama's Kid Konnection weekly link up, I've made children's book a regular feature on the blog every Friday.

I read 44 adult fiction and non-fiction books in 2016. Not as many as I would have liked, but with 3 kids who are very active in school events and working quite often as a substitute teacher, I don't always have the reading time that I want to have. I also had a few reading slumps where nothing could entice me to read. I am hoping to do better this year about regularly scheduled reading and always having a few books going at once so I can read whatever I'm in the mood for. Just like the teachers at school tell my kids, reading just 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference.

Since I write for the Gazette, they asked me for my Top 5 Books of 2016. It was tough to narrow it down to only 5. For this space, I like to make it a few more across various genres. So, I'll share my Top 5 Books for the Gazette as well as some others I really loved.

I chose these as my Top 5 because it was a good mix of the types of books I like to read. Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors and her books never disappoint. I love historical fiction and feel-good fiction/non-fiction. I've read so many children's books this year that I couldn't leave them out. This list also only includes books published in 2016.

Top 5 Books of 2016

By: Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig

Three best-selling authors come together to write the story of one historic location in New York City and the three women who are connected by generations of love and loss. Told in alternating time periods, this is historical fiction at its best.

I loved it because I liked how they bridged three generations of women together and how one woman’s choice can have repercussions for many years. It reminded me to listen to my heart and follow my dreams. See my full review, HERE

By: Rachael Herron

Abby and Fern are different as two women can be but are connected by one man. The friendship that blooms through the pages of this book is messy, frustrating, and awkward, but will remind you of what it truly means to be a family.

This unlikely friendship warmed my heart and I went through several Kleenex while reading. Family is really a title for those who matter to you the most. One man’s selfish mistake changed the lives of these two women forever and yet they wouldn’t have it any other way.  See my full review, HERE

By: Jodi Picoult

This timely novel is quite possibly Picoult’s finest work yet. Reading this will be uncomfortable, thought-provoking, and will make you want to talk about it with everyone you know.

My own prejudices were called to the forefront while reading this novel. It was a reality check and an honest look at how far we have yet to go in a world laced with judgment and hatred. This novel scared me and yet gave me hope that there will be a change towards love and acceptance of everyone. See my full review, HERE

By: Tony Cointreau

In a world full of judgment and criticism, Cointreau’s stories of love, patience, forgiveness, and friendship while working in Mother’s Teresa’s Hospice will remind you that there is still goodness in the world.

I learned many years ago that there is no greater privilege than spending time with someone in their final days on this Earth. No matter what has happened in the past, the greatest gift we can give someone is love. See my full review, HERE.

By: Lola M Schaefer and Adam Schaefer

Introduce your child to the beauty of nature and the life-cycle of an acorn. Through die-cut pages and gorgeous illustrations, children will learn how each of us has a role in the growth of a forest.

This story made me want to run out to the woods and gather acorns. The illustrations sold me and I couldn’t wait to send this off to my great-niece. See my full review, HERE.

Now for some of my other favorites from my year of reading. Here are 12 more favorites from my reading in 2016.

Favorite Thriller/Suspense Books

This is a new genre for me and I read several from this category this year. I never liked these types of books before, but even though they stress me out, I keep going back for more. These listed below kept me turning the pages as fast as I could!

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
By: B.A. Paris

This was creeped me out, but I couldn't stop reading it. I had to know how it was all going to work out. I thought about this one for days after reading it. See my full review, HERE.

VENGEANCE
By: Eric Prochaska

This was written by an Iowa native and was set in Cedar Rapids. Having a familiar setting made the story a fun read, but the story of two brothers kept me reading. See my full review, HERE.

Favorite Non-Fiction Books

I love non-fiction books. I usually have at least one going at all times. This year I read books that inspired me, ones that taught me about life, and ones that offered me new ways to cook.

WORKING STIFF
By: Judy Melinek, MD and T. J. Mitchell

I was fascinated by this memoir of a medical examiner. My favorite section was her time during 9/11. See my full review, HERE.

BEING MORTAL
By: Atul Gawande

I have told nearly everyone I know to read this book. If you have aging parents, if you want to be sure your family knows your wishes if something medically wrong happens to you, if you want to have a conversation with your spouse about your future, please read this book. See my full review, HERE.

BROWN GIRL DREAMING
By: Jacqueline Woodson

This memoir written in prose was absolutely wonderful. Don't let the prose/poem part scare you. It makes it so much better. It's a middle-grade/YA read and I just loved it. My daughter read it right after me and also loved it. See my full review, HERE.

Favorite Fiction Books

Because I didn't only read books published in 2016, I have some other favorite fiction books that I read this year.

THE NIGHTINGALE
By: Kristin Hannah

I wanted to read this one in 2015, but just didn't get to it. Then I kicked myself for waiting so long. It is one of those books that you won't be able to forget. Loved it! I didn't review this one because I didn't think I had anything new to add to the hundreds of other reviews. All I can say is...Read. This. Book. It's being made into a movie as well!

ME BEFORE YOU
By; Jo Jo Moyes

Another one I didn't get read until this year. Then I watched the movie. Loved both of them. See my review, HERE.

THE MATCHMAKERS OF MINNOW BAY
By: Kelly Harms

Another Iowa native that I had the pleasure of interviewing and reading. Really talented writer and one I can't wait to read more from. See my full review, HERE.

Favorite Children's Books

Since I've been reading more children's books lately, I had to share my favorites. I'll share both fiction and non-fiction books.

BRAVE LITTLE FINN
By: John and Jennifer Churchman

This is the second in the Sweet Pea & Friends series and I adored it. The story of a sweet little lamb struggling to survive and growing up over a year on the farm reminded me of all the sweet baby lambs we raised when I was growing up. The photography on each page is amazing. I want to frame the book cover it is so adorable. See my full review, HERE.

DINING WITH DINOSAURS
By: National Geographic Kids and Hannah Bonner

If you have a dinosaur fan in your house, get this book! It's hilarious and your child won't even realize they are learning something on every page because it is so well done. A really great science book for kids! See my full review, HERE.

PIPSIE NATURE DETECTIVE: THE LUNCHNAPPER
By: Rick DeDonato

The first PIPSIE NATURE DETECTIVE book made my favorites list last year and this one is just as wonderful. A sweet story and your child will learn about nature at the same time. See my full review, HERE.

AWESOME AMERICA
By: Katy Steinmetz

Everything about our great country all wrapped up in one book. A great book to read with your kids and maybe find ideas for your next family road trip! See my full review, HERE.

First Book of 2017

Sheila at Book Journey started this lovely feature where each of us can share our first book of the year. All of us can link up our choices and see what everyone else is choosing as their first book.

Of course, we all have different reasons for why a certain book is going to be our first book. But, for me, I like to choose a book that is one I want to read for my own enjoyment. Not because I HAVE to read it for a review or assignment.

Last year, I chose A MANUAL FOR CLEANING WOMEN because I had heard so many wonderful things about it. Unfortunately, I only got half-way through it before I abandoned it. It just wasn't what I had hoped and when I set it aside, I realized I had no desire to go back to it. I have too many other great books waiting to be cracked open to keep reading something I don't care to read. So, sadly, last year's book wasn't a great choice, but I think this year's choice will be.

This year's First Book of 2017 is THE TWO-FAMILY HOUSE by Lynda Cohen Loigman. I have only heard good things about this book. I just recently snagged it on a Kindle deal. I also recommended it to my cousin who just finished it and she liked it. So, I'm confident I'll finish this one! Goodreads shows a cumulative 3.95 out of 5 stars and Amazon show 4.3 out of 5 stars for the ratings. That's pretty impressive.

THE TWO-FAMILY HOUSE
By: Lynda Cohen Loigman
Published: March 8, 2016
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Format: eBook

Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:

Brooklyn, 1947: in the midst of a blizzard, in a two-family brownstone, two babies are born minutes apart to two women. They are sisters by marriage with an impenetrable bond forged before and during that dramatic night; but as the years progress, small cracks start to appear and their once deep friendship begins to unravel. No one knows why, and no one can stop it. One misguided choice; one moment of tragedy. Heartbreak wars with happiness and almost but not quite wins.

Why do I think I'll love it? It's historical fiction. It's set during a blizzard which makes January in Iowa a perfect time to read it. It's about family drama and there is a secret. Also, this is a debut novel from this author which is also something I love. I think it'll make the perfect choice for my First Book of 2017.

What is your First Book of 2017? Feel free to share it with me in the comments!

Books that Came in November 2016

I have received so much great advice in relation to my reading life. From bloggers to friends to business experts the tips and suggestions have truly been helpful. I appreciate every piece of it and am really taking them all to heart. I've implemented some changes already. But with the holiday season, I'm truly going to not stress during the month of December and focus my new plan in 2017. I'm determined to not get so far behind and tackle that ever-growing to-read list!

I've got a lot of books this month from authors I've already read and loved. So, that should mean I have some awesome reading ahead!

December is the month of giving and I plan to give several books as gifts this year. I'm also getting back to a regular book club which gets me excited about reading again. Just talking about books and being around fellow readers makes me want to read.

There are some really neat books for adults and kids that I'll be sharing this month. Many of them would make great gifts. I hope you will find a way to get books in the hands of at least one of your gift recipients this holiday season!

If you would like to purchase any of these books,
clicking on the photo of the book will take you directly to Amazon.
If you choose to purchase, I will receive a small commission
without you having to pay any more for your purchase.
I appreciate your support of SincerelyStacie.com reviews.

I'll be linking up with The Deliberate Reader
to share our stacks of books for November

BOOKS FOR REVIEW

THE GOOD DAUGHTER
By: Alexandra Burt
Published: February 7, 2017
Publisher: Berkley
Format: Paperback

I read Burt's debut novel REMEMBERING MIA and loved it. See my review, HERE. So, I was thrilled to get a copy of her sophomore novel.

What if you were the worst crime your mother ever committed?
Dahlia Waller's childhood memories consist of stuffy cars, seedy motels, and a rootless existence traveling the country with her eccentric mother. Now grown, she desperately wants to distance herself from that life. Yet one thing is stopping her from moving forward: she has questions.
In order to understand her past, Dahlia must go back. Back to her mother in the stifling town of Aurora, Texas. Back into the past of a woman on the brink of madness. But after she discovers three grave-like mounds on a neighboring farm, she'll learn that in her mother s world of secrets, not all questions are meant to be answered.

MAX'S DIAMONDS
By: Jay Greenfield
Published: April 18, 2016
Publisher: Chickadee Prince Books
Format: Paperback

The synopsis alone sold me on this one. I am trying not to take on too many novels, but this one got my attention.

A stunning decades-spanning debut novel, about a man, forced to confront his moral culpability, the legacy of impossible loss, and the claims of his Jewish identity.

Paul Hartman, coming of age in postwar Rockaway, grows up haunted by the specter of his cousin Max, an Auschwitz survivor, and his mysterious cache of diamonds, which fund Paul’s Harvard Law education and even sparkle in his fiancée’s engagement ring. When a stranger from his past confronts him with an impossible demand, one that could destroy his law career, his marriage and his sense of self, Paul must make choices that will change his fate forever.

THE FOOD OF LOVE
By: Amanda Prowse

This was a choice in the Kindle First November edition. I loved the cover and the synopsis hit my heart as a mom.

Freya Braithwaite knows she is lucky. Nineteen years of marriage to a man who still warms her soul and two beautiful teenage daughters to show for it: confident Charlotte and thoughtful Lexi. Her home is filled with love and laughter.

But when Lexi’s struggles with weight take control of her life, everything Freya once took for granted falls apart, leaving the whole family with a sense of helplessness that can only be confronted with understanding, unity and, above all, love.

In this compelling and heart-wrenching new work by bestselling author Amanda Prowse, one ordinary family tackles unexpected difficulties and discovers that love can find its way through life’s darkest moments.

THE NEARNESS OF YOU
By: Amanda Eyre Ward
Published: February 14, 2017
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Format: eBook

Ward's first book THE SAME SKY was my favorite book of 2015. See my review, HERE. I'm hoping to dig into this one over Christmas break!

Brilliant heart surgeon Suzette Kendall is stunned when Hyland, her husband of fifteen years, admits his yearning for a child. From the beginning, they’d decided that having children was not an option, as Suzette feared passing along the genes that landed her mother in a mental institution. But Hyland proposes a different idea: a baby via surrogate.

Suzette agrees, and what follows is a whirlwind of candidate selections, hospital visits, and Suzette’s doubts over whether she’s made the right decision. A young woman named Dorothy Muscarello is chosen as the one who will help make this family complete. For Dorrie, surrogacy (and the money that comes with it) are her opportunity to leave behind a troubled past and create a future for herself—one full of possibility. But this situation also forces all three of them—Dorrie, Suzette, and Hyland—to face a devastating uncertainty that will reverberate in the years to come.

Beautifully shifting between perspectives, THE NEARNESS OF YOU deftly explores the connections we form, the families we create, and the love we hold most dear.

BETTER TOGETHER
By: Kimberly Stuart
Published: October 31, 2016
Publisher: Blom Books
Format: eBook

Stuart is an Iowa author and one I've been wanting to read for awhile. In fact, I have her books on my Kindle just waiting to be read. Since she has a new book to promote, I decided now would be a great time. I've followed her blog for quite awhile and love her writing.

Heidi Elliott is busy, busy, busy.

Now that she and Jake are parents of a kindergartner, Heidi has a to-do list a mile long. Like deep clean the kitchen cabinets. Volunteer in Nora’s classroom. Create sparkly USA ninja warrior Halloween costumes for two. Repaint several pieces of household furniture. Meddle in her best friends’ relationships.

Grieve her most recent failed pregnancy.

Find her misplaced hope.

Jake wants to adopt. Nora plans to pray a sibling into existence. And Heidi keeps moving to avoid thinking about anything other than paint colors.

Thoughtlessness, of course, leads to mistakes and misunderstandings, and in the space of a month, Heidi manages to lose control of a group of kindergartners, make a terrible impression on the social worker, and damage—possibly irreparably—her closest friendships.

And then she remembers. She doesn’t have to go it alone. Sometimes we really are better together.

TRAVELING LIGHT
By: Lynne Branard
Published: January 10, 2017
Publisher: Berkley
Format: eBook

I loved Branard's book THE ART OF ARRANGING FLOWERS. See my review, HERE.  This one definitely sounds like joyful read!

Driving from North Carolina to New Mexico with her three-legged dog, a strange man's ashes, and a waitress named Blossom riding shotgun isn't exactly what Alissa Wells ever wanted to be doing. But it's exactly what she needs...

It all starts when Alissa impulsively puts a bid on an abandoned storage unit, only to become the proud new owner of Roger Hart s remains. Two weeks later, she jumps in her car and heads west, thinking that returning the ashes of a dead man might be the first step on her way to a new life.
She isn't wrong.

Especially when Blossom, who just graduated from high school, hitches a ride with her to Texas and Alissa has to get used to letting someone else take the wheel. Posting about their road trip on Facebook, complete with photos of Roger at every stop, Blossom opens Alissa s eyes to the road in front of her and to how sometimes the best things in life are the ones you never see coming

TOWERS FALLING
By: Jewell Parker Rhodes
Published: July 12, 2016
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Format: Hardcover

I won this through bookclubcookbook.com but found out after I had purchased a copy through our daughter's Scholastic order. So, I will have one to giveaway soon! I previously read the author's novel about Hurricane Katrina, NINTH WARD and thought it was a great way to share the story of such devastation for the YA reader. See my review, HERE. This one about 9/11 sounds just as good.

When her fifth-grade teacher hints that a series of lessons about home and community will culminate with one big answer about two tall towers once visible outside their classroom window, Deja can't help but feel confused. She sets off on a journey of discovery, with new friends Ben and Sabeen by her side. But just as she gets closer to answering big questions about who she is, what America means, and how communities can grow (and heal), she uncovers new questions, too. Like, why does Pop get so angry when she brings up anything about the towers?

Award-winning author Jewell Parker Rhodes tells a powerful story about young people who weren't alive to witness this defining moment in history, but begin to realize how much it colors their every day.

PEE WEE THE CHRISTMAS TREE
By: George Wells
Published: July 5, 2016
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Format: Paperback

I've already reviewed this book, HERE. It's a sweet story with a lesson for all perfect for reading next to the twinkling Christmas tree.

The author's thoughts on the book: Pee Wee is based on a song I had written in 1972. Recently, I came across a file with a copy of the sheet music in it, and the thought came to mind. Hey, this just might become a good Children's book. I wanted the story to have a good moral to it. That is: If you have a goal in life, do not be discouraged, keep believing in yourself and don't surrender that dream. Yes, there will be roadblocks and setbacks, but keep moving toward your goal. Pee Wee, had an obstacle to overcome. He was much smaller than the other Christmas trees and was often overlooked. Yet, he got his opportunity to literally shine. Pee Wee was the perfect match for one family, proving that large or small there is room for us all. It is my hope that everyone finds a bit of hope and encouragement in these words.

I purchased these for my great-niece who told me she likes funny books and had just read the book MIDDLE SCHOOL THE WORST YEARS OF MY LIFE. I thought these would be perfect for her.

I FUNNY: Jamie Grimm is a middle schooler on a mission: he wants to become the world's greatest standup comedian--even if he doesn't have a lot to laugh about these days. He's new in town and stuck living with his aunt, uncle, and their evil son Stevie, a bully who doesn't let Jamie's wheelchair stop him from messing with Jamie as much as possible. But Jamie doesn't let his situation get him down. When his Uncle Frankie mentions a contest called The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic, Jamie knows he has to enter. But are the judges only rewarding him out of pity because of his wheelchair, like Stevie suggests? Will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past instead of hiding behind his comedy act?

I EVEN FUNNIER: Middle schooler Jamie Grimm has big dreams of being the best stand-up comic in the world – and he won't let the fact that he's in a wheelchair get in his way.

After winning the New York state finals in the Planet's Funniest Kid Comic Contest, Jamie's off to Boston to compete in the national semi-finals. But when one of his best buddies runs into trouble at school and a sudden family health scare rears its head, Jamie has to put his comedic ambitions on hold and stand by the people he cares about.

Can Jamie pass up the big competition for the sake of his friends and family?

I TOTALLY FUNNIEST: Jamie Grimm is back and better than ever in the third episode of James Patterson's bestselling I FUNNY series. Finding himself one step closer to his dream of being the best kid comic in the world, Jamie faces his biggest challenge yet.

After scoring big on national TV in the semifinals contest, everyone back home is jumping on the Jamie Grimm bandwagon, and all the attention might be going to his head. Not only are his friendships starting to suffer, but the pressure of coming up with his best material ever for the ultimate standup act to snag the final win in Hollywood is pushing Jamie to the brink. Suddenly, life isn't looking very funny anymore. Can Jamie take the grand prize without pushing away his fans, friends, and family?

THIS SIDE OF WILD
Mutts, Mares, and Laughing Dinosaurs
By: Gary Paulsen
Published: September 27, 2016
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Format: Paperback

That same great-niece also loves animals and I thought this one sounded really neat. I hope she likes it.

The Newbery Honor–winning author of HATCHET and DOGSONG shares surprising true stories about his relationship with animals, highlighting their compassion, intellect, intuition, and sense of adventure.

Gary Paulsen is an adventurer who competed in two Iditarods, survived the Minnesota wilderness, and climbed the Bighorns. None of this would have been possible without his truest companion: his animals. Sled dogs rescued him in Alaska, a sickened poodle guarded his well-being, and a horse led him across a desert. Through his interactions with dogs, horses, birds, and more, Gary has been struck with the belief that animals know more than we may fathom.

His understanding and admiration of animals is well known, and in THIS SIDE OF WILD, which has taken a lifetime to write, he proves the ways in which they have taught him to be a better person.

LAST MAN OUT
By: Mike Lupica
Published; September 13, 2016
Publisher: Philomel Books
Format: Hardcover

My son needs to read books for his English class and do book talks over them. Since this is a new one from Lupica, I thought he might be interested in it.

When the Brighton Bears suit up on game day, 12-year-old Tommy Gallagher is the toughest kid on the football field. And the bravest. After all, his father Patrick is a Boston firefighter--one of Boston's bravest. Tommy's dad taught him everything he knows about football--and life.

Yet even Tommy isn't strong enough for what happens when the sirens ring and, for the first time, they're racing away from the fire. "First man in; last man out" had always been his dad's motto . . . yet he never said anything about leaving in an ambulance. Now Tommy's biggest battle has nothing to do with a football field.

Set in New England, home of the Patriots' football dynasty, Mike Lupica shows off his trademark knack for spinning a tale that's equal parts sports action and heart. LAST MAN OUT is a thoughtful tribute to the bravery of firefighters and the need we all have to live up to the level of our heroes.

THE ROUND HOUSE
By: Louise Erdich
Published: October 2, 2012
Publisher: Harper
Format: eBook

My nephew told me recently that this was one of the best books he has read ever. He is a high school English teacher in a Native American reservation school. This book has been on my to read list for awhile anyway and now I know I must read it. It has been on the Kindle Deal list this month, but as always that price could change at any time.

One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared.

While his father, who is a tribal judge, endeavors to wrest justice from a situation that defies his efforts, Joe becomes frustrated with the official investigation and sets out with his trusted friends, Cappy, Zack, and Angus, to get some answers of his own. Their quest takes them first to the Round House, a sacred space and place of worship for the Ojibwe. And this is only the beginning.

A SIMPLE ACT OF GRATITUDE
How Learning to Say Thank You Changed My Life
By: John Kralik
Published: December 27, 2011
Publisher: Hachette Books
Format: eBook

This was part of an Audible deal and I felt like giving it a shot. I've listened a few times, but it hasn't grabbed me quite yet. The author is still explaining what got him into the negative state that he was in, so I'm hoping once he gets to the gratitude part, I'll be more interested.

One recent December, at age 53, John Kralik found his life at a terrible, frightening low: his small law firm was failing; he was struggling through a painful second divorce; he had grown distant from his two older children and was afraid he might lose contact with his young daughter; he was living in a tiny apartment where he froze in the winter and baked in the summer; he was 40 pounds overweight; his girlfriend had just broken up with him; and overall, his dearest life dreams--including hopes of upholding idealistic legal principles and of becoming a judge--seemed to have slipped beyond his reach.

Then, during a desperate walk in the hills on New Year's Day, John was struck by the belief that his life might become at least tolerable if, instead of focusing on what he didn't have, he could find some way to be grateful for what he had.

Inspired by a beautiful, simple note his ex-girlfriend had sent to thank him for his Christmas gift, John imagined that he might find a way to feel grateful by writing thank-you notes. To keep himself going, he set himself a goal--come what may--of writing 365 thank-you notes in the coming year.

One by one, day after day, he began to handwrite thank yous--for gifts or kindnesses he'd received from loved ones and coworkers, from past business associates and current foes, from college friends and doctors and store clerks and handymen and neighbors, and anyone, really, absolutely anyone, who'd done him a good turn, however large or small. Immediately after he'd sent his very first notes, significant and surprising benefits began to come John's way--from financial gain to true friendship, from weight loss to inner peace. While John wrote his notes, the economy collapsed, the bank across the street from his office failed, but thank-you note by thank-you note, John's whole life turned around.

A LITTLE IN LOVE
By: Susan E. Fletcher
Published: August 25, 2015

I purchased this at our school's Scholastic Book Fair for our daughter. I LOVE Les Miserable and haven't shared it with her yet. But, this story caught my attention as a way to introduce her to the story.

When at sixteen the girls' paths cross again and their circumstances are reversed, Eponine must decide what that friendship is worth, even though they've both fallen for the same boy. In the end, Eponine will sacrifice everything to keep true love alive.

THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF SISTERS
By: Luanne Rice
Published: Point
Publisher: February 23, 2016
Format: Paperback

I also purchased this at the Scholastic Book Fair. I've been seeing this book all over and wanted to check it out for myself.

When Ruth Ann (Roo) McCabe responds to a text message while she’s driving, her life as she knows it ends. The car flips and Roo winds up in a hospital bed, paralyzed. Silent. Everyone thinks she’s in a coma, but Roo has locked-in syndrome—she can see and hear and understand everything around her, but no one knows it. She’s trapped inside her own body, screaming to be heard.

Mathilda (Tilly) is Roo’s sister and best friend. She was the one who texted Roo and inadvertently caused the accident. Now, Tilly must grapple with her overwhelming guilt and her growing feelings for Roo’s boyfriend, Newton—the only other person who seems to get what Tilly is going through.

But Tilly might be the only person who can solve the mystery of her sister’s condition—who can see through Roo’s silence to the truth underneath.

Somehow, through medicine or miracles, will both sisters find a way to heal?

Told from alternating perspectives, this gorgeous, unputdownable story of love, hope, and redemption marks bestselling author Luanne Rice’s dazzling entry into the world of YA.

THE TWO FAMILY HOUSE
By: Lynda Cohen Loigman
Published: March 8, 2016
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Format: eBook

I snagged this on the Cyber Monday Kindle Deals. I don't remember where I heard about this book, but it was already on my list. It sounds like a perfect book to get lost in.
